It's a f***in' crying shame that it's things like this that get people worked up instead of things that actually matter.

I don't think this is a big deal.

I got the vibe that they're going to be able to charge end users based on how much bandwidth is used. I could be wrong, wouldn't that hit online games pretty hard? Just asking.

from my understanding there appears to be a potential tiered system of service.
the more you pay the better your service, IE: your requests get priority. I don't think it's going to be a pay-per-bandwidth type of thing. at least, it better not be. But i havent read anything in that regards. kind of like buying a car i spent more money on a gt when i could have settled for a v6 mustang instead. I'm paying for a faster car... I'm not sure how i feel... i can go both ways on the issue. on one hand, these companies are spending a ton of money building the infrastructure and should be able to charge as they see fit and should be able to accept money from customers and advertisers for preferential treatment. on the other hand... i don't want to see my service degenerate because of this and i certainly don't want to be denied access to various internet sources because i'm not paying a premium or because comcast, for instance, doesnt have a contract with say... yahoo and block all of the websites owned by them. i feel the potential for blocking content is far more nefarious than preferential treatment and something i am far more concerned about. and it's a crying shame people can't be upset about something without others attempting to downplay the importance of an issue because they deem it unimportant to themselves. this is a big issue for me... being in IT... being in web development. what if comcast decides to block all of my employer's websites unless they pay a large fee? and what if my company is unable to pay that fee? what if comcast decides to block the companies i generally use to host my websites? |

it's going to be a big deal when politicians pay companies to block certain websites.
we're talking about freedom of speech on the internet. gov doesn't like wikileaks... well, how about they pay comcast to make it so all of their users are unable to access the site? it obviously extends past just wikileaks. it's no good |

I worked in the telecommunications industry for years and years. Certain services already get priority service over others. The internet is not going to change at all. Get over yourselves and stop pretending the end is nigh. The end has been nigh for decades now and everyone is noticing the trend that you are all just crying wolf.

It also raises the question of where the Government's jurisdiction ends/begins on the internet. Obviously this isn't a "SCREAM AND PROTEST" sort of issue, but it does have implications that you probably shouldn't ignore. Quote:
We are lagging behind so much when it comes to network infrastructure.

Next time, read my post in full. I'll clarify: Quote:
Basically I'm saying "pay attention" and that's it. You worked in telecom, so you should fully understand the implications (potential ones) this has. Like I said, is it worth panic? No. But is it worth keeping up on the news? Absolutely.

freedom fighter definatly.
without people like him, Colgan (airline) would still be in buisness, possibly Enron, & a few other big compaines that do illegal ****. I for one am ALL FOR Whistle blowers....doesnt matter if its my govt, or somone elses., people need to be called out on thier mistakes, & not hide them from the public,.....because if so, & people do find out, they are typically ALOT madded that you lied, or hid the issue, instead of coming right out with it |
