What should my friend do about break in issue with car?

A friend of mine was over at a store and she by mistake locked her keys into her car. Well she was going to get her spare key from home but the store owner just told her it be quicker to call a cop to unlock the door for her.

Well she did that and the cop with that unlock tool tore up her door panel really bad and as well damaged the door frame. I am not sure how the door frame was even damaged being she owns a car that the doors have no metal window frames (glass only). So you think it would have been easy as heck to pull the window away from the rubber gasket and slide the tool in?

Anyway she is pretty upset about the situation and was pressured by the store owner to let the cop continue due to setting the car alarm off.

I am really not sure if she can really do anything with getting the damaged claimed for?

At the least I offered to find a replacement door panel for her if only I can find one. Its a 99 GST and the interior is black.

not lock her keys in the car, or let amateurs get it unlocked.

should have called AAA or some other locksmith. or her parents/someone to get the spare.

nothing she can do, she asked the officer to unlocked the car. she accepted the outcome

yeah unfortunately she is liable because she is the one who called and had the cop unlock her car.

should have never listened to the store owner lol

Even though she called the cops to unlock the car, if they couldn't do it without doing damage to the car they should of said something. The damamge seems so little that it isn't even worth fighting for. I'd just fix it and learn from the mistake.

As long as the door seals aren't leaking water because of it, I suppose it could be worse

The officer isn't responsible for it. If the car alarm was going off and it was a nuisance and she agreed to let him open it then it's on her.

I thought cops weren't even allowed to attempt to try and open cars anymore?

It's the same thing where if the fire department "believes" theres a fire in a house and they can't get in. They can break any windows, doors etc to check.

In most cases even if there's no fire, they aren't responsible.

Plus she can try and take it to a lawyer but, ultimately she will spend more $ trying to prove her point then to just fix it.

If she's prone to locking her keys in she should get those high powered magnet key boxes
Make a spare and keep it in there under her car somewhere.

http://www.amazon.com/Baumgartens-Ma.../dp/B001LOQHCY

It's $1.39- plus the cost of a key. It's a good investment for anyone.
