a lot of pictures now, I feel can easily be re-shot with a good ol' 35 mm camera. I went to St. Thomas last year for a family trip, half of my shots were in film and the other half digital. If you held them up side by side, you wouldn't notice the difference

Oh really?

Have you ever printed in a dark room? One can burn, dodge, adjust contrast, and adjust saturation in a dark room. Selenium, sepia, and various dye color toners can be added to alter the color of the photograph.

Some of the masters of photography are known for their distinct editing. Double exposure is one technique, and Harry Callahan is known for it.

Technology has just evolved the way in which we edit. Yes, some people edit in a way that detracts from the photograph, but I don't agree with your point at all. I did three years of film photography and worked in a dark room. Editing software like Photoshop is liberating. So much can be done. Do you not consider this art?

I do.

Yes I have printed in a dark room, and I will stand behind what I said there are way too many people out there who over edit pictures I really don't think pictures should ever need to be edited.

Oh, you're one of those pretentious purists.

Photographers have always edited their work, whether it be film or digital.

Some do not, and that's fine. But for those to say others who do edit are not photographers is

Get overyourselves. lol Its like a bunch of camera Nazi's in here. I am sure everyone in here with a camera at one point or another would have liked cameras that were more user friendly. Now that you think you know what you are doing God forbid someone can take just as good of photos without having to know everything about photography.
What's wrong with being passionate about photography? For some of us, it is more than a hobby, it's a way of life.

Being on an automotive site, I would imagine that you are passionate about cars, right?

Think of it this way. You've built yourself a car that runs a 10 in the 1/4 mile, with a manual gearbox, RWD, and it takes some skill to get it down the track in a straight line. You line up next to a wealthy individual in a Veyron with the A/C on. Mr. Moneypockets puts down the same time as you by merely putting his foot to the floor, without any of the drama that you had to deal with. Would you say that he deserves the same recognition as you?

There's simply no skill or passion involved when the camera does all the work for you. You might as well get a lobotomy.

Sure, photography has become more accessible. However, I am not a believer that by simply pressing a button, that you should get a great image. Great photographs, while sometimes instances of luck, are often premeditated, thought out, and carefully analyzed prior to their capture.

I think that you would be surprised by the amount of work that can done in a darkroom. Since you said that, would you still say that people who dodge, burn, and tweak their film prints are just "photo editors?"

I'm talking digital and editing software, now that it's a whole lot easier to shoot and edit photos there are alot less real photographers out there. And it seems slot of people agree with me there is such a huge ammout of people who are photographers who really aren't talented but because it's so much easier now with everything being digital there are alot more crappy photographers as to actual talented people is what I meant.

You said you don't think pictures should be edited. So is a real photographer someone who doesn't edit pictures? You're jumping all around.

^THIS times infinity

I have no problem with people exploring photography who normally wouldn't. it's something their interested in. but when they take a crappy shot and spend hours on post processing in ps to make their crappy shot less crappy, the point of photography is missed. by a long shot.

I agree most shots benefit from minor post processing. but when you take your time to compose your shots, wait for the perfect lighting, focus on just the right subject, angle, dof, etc. THATS where the magic happens!

too many people rely on photoshop.
