Laptop is dead I think

Ok so last night I was chilling on my laptop when all of a sudden the screen blacks out, then the speakers start making this light popping noise, then I figure well I'll just power down and restart it. Well the power button didn't work and so my only choice was to unplug and pop ou the battery. Now it does nothing, won't startup at all, I have no clue what happened. Is my computer fried? I'm hoping for a software issue rather than a hardware issue. Laptop is an HP pavillion dv2500 running vista.

is it posting at all? (do you hear it run for a quick second). if not then thats a pure power issue, which means somewhere bewteen the outlet (through the chord and batterty and power supply up intill the power hits your motherboard, soemthing is wrong.

That's the problem, it's an HP. I've lost quite a bit of DV series laptops to random breaks.

Wonderful haha. I had a feeling it was going to be an hp problem. It was also randomly shutting off on me a few times recently so I figured it was a related issue.

Check the serial number on your battery. There was a huge recall on them from laptops right arroudn the age yours should be. My battery was on it. It was many manufactuers on the recall as well. I don't belive for 1 second that it is because its HP. There stuff isn't any better/worse then the rest of the market, except for Dell and Gatweay, their stuff just sucks royally.

If it doesn't turn on at all, its most likely something power related. Feel free to swing by my place to try and plug it into my power adapter. If that doesn't work, then atleast you know its something internal.

If you decide not to fix it, let me know, might be interested in buying it for parts.

If he's not getting it to power up with his charger and battery out then it's not a battery issue, but something inside that can't be fixed easily.

Are you thinking some ****ty thermal paste came undone under stress and the computer is not turning on to protect the components from overheating?

I'll say the computer does run hot, but it wasn't this time. I try and use my laptop stand with the fan built in when I can.

yep, sounds like what claimed my laptop.

basically they run so hot you lose the motherboard and the problem is that motherboard has in integrated video card and the only place you can get the whole shebang is from HP and it runs over 400 bucks so its not even worth it...

part it out and sell it

almost every laptop comes with a inter graded video card. Iv never had a problem with my HP laptop's. I would just break them before the warranty went out to get a brand new one. I have a DV laptop and a Elite HPE - 112y pc

damnit haha. I was checking out motherboards online for 120-160 for my computer, but I don't know if they have everything I need. guess i'll throw it up for parts after I get all of my pictures and everything off of it (hopefully). I have probably 2000 pictures and a ass ton of hours of music on there that I would hate to lose.

http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-DV2500-Compaq...item20b59713de

looks like they're all "remanufactured" so idk...

just buy a hard drive case and throw it in and hook it up to another computer... really easy to get all your info off....maybe even keep the drive for additional storage

hmm, yeh I didn't even think of that. That seems like it would be the cheap/simple solution. It's 312 gigs too so I can hold tons of extra crap (at least for me)

Yes those DV9000, DV6000 and Compaq V6000 models had a lot of issue's. Yours may have been included in that as well if I recall. I have a few of those collected dust in my back room from clients. Just haven't had time to fix or trash them yet.

Pretty much what happens is the GPU isn't cooled correctly. There is a thermal pad between the GPU and cooling unit. Well that sucker runs hot as **** and the solider on the GPU comes loose. You can acutally fix it yourself but is it worth it anymore? People take the laptops apart and use a heat gun to fix the solder holding the GPU back on. Once people have done this it works perfectly fine again. Then instead of using a thermal pad you can buy a copper shim to greatly increase the cooling for the GPU. You can find these on ebay.

HP did extended the warranty on most of those laptops for an additional 3 years on top of your base warranty. It was called the "HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement". However being the laptops are now 4+ years old that is long since gone and you can't send it back.

People were buying these broken laptops up like crazy on ebay and shipping them back to HP for a free repair. I bought a broken one on Ebay for 25 bucks and HP repaired it and the laptops works perfectly fine. So for 25 bucks I got myself a whole new spare laptop. However I need to address that GPU cooling issue before it breaks again.

Here is a guide on how to fix the GPU issue with the DV6000/9000 however I am not sure if this is the SAME issue you are having with your DV2500

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEpnq...video_response

If you need the data off your laptop just pull it out and plug it into a PC with a Sata connector. It will mount it as a spare drive so you can pull the files off of it.
