That being said, the easiest thing would be to simply gut the cat. Youll get darn near the same increase in power and sound, for zero cost. My neon has two cats stock, one with an 02 sensor before and after, and one without an 02. The 2nd cat became clogged, so I removed the ceramic honeycomb from the inside of it. Illegal? Technically yes, but because the cat that I gutted was after the 2nd o2 sensor, the car doesnt throw a code, and still passes emissions.

Thats my thing it's after the rear o2's miles past the o2's. The shop I was at said they wouldn't do it because of voiding my warranty. GM added the cat on my year model the 07 and 08's don't have it.

man, i sure hope they dont make a big deal about cats, i removed all traces of my cats, and i run a custom tune with the rear o2s coded out. i had 2 pre cats and 2 main cats, i bought downpipes with none and i will never go back to running cats!! we will see here in jan. if i pass emissions.

my friends car has been through inspection twice with not cats and a spacer on the rear o2, other than smelling like a lawn mower you would never know.

No shop is going to remove a cat from a registered/inspected car.. I belive its a fat fine.

FYI, there is virtually no power gains form removing cats on a car... until you hit extremly high HP. Don't waste your time worring about it. |

I dont think youve ever removed a cat then. My integra went from 197whp to 176whp with the addition of a Carsound 2.5" high flow cat, and no other changes made (aside from the tune). I've gutted a few cats in my day, and the difference is definitely noticable in the butt dyno. Have a look inside a catalytic converter, and then tell me its not an obstruction.

so you lost 21 whp (consistently?) by adding a "high flow" cat & tuning for it....... sounds like your tune is screwed up. shouldn't of "lost" that much power just by adding a cat. spend the money for a good cat, not some $20 eBay special. good cats usually run $100+.
what's done to you Integra?

all i'm trying to do is get a little more sound out of the car. I already put a small resonator and a aftermarket muffler on it, and it's quieter than a stock G35/350Z exhaust.

If you don't dyno back to back on the same day, you don't really know what changed because weather makes huge differenceso on numbers. Even something as simple as a different dyno will through everything off. So changing cats out at different times doesn't prove you actually gained. You wold need a baseline the day off the install and a run after the install to see if you actually benifit. Maybe on extremely high HP applications you get more out of it but typical street use shouldn't. If you don't belive me, we can take my car to the dyno. I'll do a run as it is now(catess) and then we can put the stock catted mids back on and rerun. I guarentee I net less then 2HP difference and that is mostly because of the piping, not the cat itself. Gutting a cat loses HP because you are losing smooth airflow of a constant round pipe... atleast thats what I think(no research done). Do some research before you buy next time. is the car under your avatar the one your speaking of? because that may be true in the N/A world but the FI crowd its a whole different ball game. i have a pre cat about 1.5 inches from the turbo outlet, then about a foot and a half i have the "main" cats. i went from 333 wheel tq to 395 wheel tq just from upgrading from stock downpipes to 3 in ones with no cats at all. the stock downpipes are 3 in from the mouth and then taper after the "pre" cat, this was on a dyno dynamics "heart breaker" dyno. i can tell you it made a huge difference in spool time. again im just speaking in terms of FI i have no idea bout the world of NA all this was done with meth turned off as well, and both runs were done one day apart. also i run the stock exhaust and i can tell you it sounds a lot different. just my 2 cents. |
