Ban on Pit-bull's

Hey everyone in case you haven't heard they are trying to ban Pit-bull's. Not just from certain cities or from owning them...but the entire breed. They are trying to wipe them out and it's ridiculous. Here is an article my mom wrote for her newspaper. If everyone could please register and comment on the article I would really appreciate it. Whether you feel good, bad or indifferent please comment!!!

READER REACTION: Ban on Pit Bulls? Why stop there?

god its so hard for me not to go on a multi-page rant! im cross posting this on my FB too..

::edit::

nothing against your mom, but the article would probably be a LOT more effective if there were some statistics in it rather than just her opinion... i mean obviously she loves her dog, but if uneducated people are to be swayed, they need more than one woman loving her dog. Regardless, good for her, i wish someone would give me a magazine to write an article in about this.

anyways

my fav. quote, from the DVM (doctors of veterinary medicine) newsletter, took me a minute to find..

"If these lawmakers are assuming the behavior of a dog can be determined by the way it looks, then all German
Shepherds should make excellent police dogs, and there would be a 100-percent success rate with Golden
Retrievers as seeing-eye dogs."

::edit squared:: i tried signing up twice and it wont let me log in...

Here's just one of the many articles you can find with a google search.

Lol, I like it how you say that "they" are trying to wipe out a breed when I have read or heard nothing of the like. Certain cities have banned owning pit bulls as family pets not wiped them out. I know plenty of people with pit bulls as family pets which are calm and serene, so I don't agree that they are they killer breed that they are portrayed as, but they do seem to be stronger and more muscular than other breeds therefore are easy targets for people who choose to pit them in fights. Still, your thread body is kind of misleading. I will not comment on your moms story because she goes on a typical tangent. Let me guess, you own pit bulls or have owned some in the past? I'm not surprised. Still, banning a breed of dog nationwide would take federal legislation or every single state to enact legislation which I see no indication of.

it is on a city level at this point, but god only knows how long it will take for it to become statewide... http://www.dogsbite.org/legislating-...-by-state.html

+ a million

Too many people don't take dog ownership seriously enough and buy for the wrong reasons. A dog isn't an accessory to show off. It needs proper training and attention or else anything from a pitbull to a poodle will give you issues. Granted, a pitbull will do more damage than a poodle, but that argument can be made for many of the large breed dogs. It is a shame that the dogs get the bum rap for people not taking enough time or making enough of an effort.

This is crazy, imagine if this was on a human level... oh wait... the holocaust... Hmm... yea this seems OK since they are meaningless dogs. [\end sarcasm]

(I apologize if this offended anyone, I am merely trying to put this on a more comprehensible level.)

Obviously you're a little on the slow side considering it's my dog in the article that she's writing about and she even goes on to mention that we have owned pit-bulls prior to my current one. You also must be one of the misled by the media and their slant to portray pit-bulls as nothing more than viscous animals that do nothing but attack people for pleasure.

Pitbull or not, a dog is a animal is and no matter how much you want to deny it, animals are UNPREDICTABLE. Hell look at humans. This should be no way exclusive to Pit's cause Chihuahua's and LopsAhpsa's or whatever are way more viscous, and most owners think their snowflake is to cute to do damage and awe she's just a cute lil barker aren't u, don't you want to pet her, go ahead pet away barkSnap... DIE

Back on track.
On one hand, we have a pit in our family(bro inlaws) and I adore her- it has lived with us for a couple years, slept under our covers by our feet every night. I'm crazy enough to let the kids (3-2-1) play with her, of course not unsupervised. The dog has never lunged at one person and I would not expect her to, but she could. This dog was raised while they were still living with her mother and her mom's 2 pits. All 3 from the same litter, raised in the same environment for 90% of their lives, yet completely different demeanors. One of her mothers ended up getting lose and attacking a small teacup mutt... nothing of the sort ever happened before and as far as we understand it was unprovoked.

On the other hand about 10 years ago, a young 6-7yr old girl had most of her upper lip bitten off by a pit down the street from here. The dog was the next door neighbors family pit. Everyone on the street was pretty comfy with the dog and prior to this incident most would have never thunk it could happen on our street.

I love our dog(newfy), our fam's pit, and I loved the pit down the street... But once it bites unprovoked I'll use the bullet.

Also, so many people are ignorant on how to approach a dog to begin with, which can cause a lot of problems. If you don't know the dog, the animal is most fearful and scared and of course quick to react to a person's quick movement's.

I would rather see a need for something like doggy insurance then to ban complete breeds. Holy **** did I just mention that.?.?.
Either way, we all need to take the "But it's our family dog" blinders off. Because unfortunately for some the majority rules.

Really, REALLY, don't like pitbulls personally. But I don't think that calls for a ban either.

Okay, first of all, there is no such breed as a "pit bull," so let's clear that up here, lol. Pit bull is a term to describe a whole group of breeds of dogs. Those breeds include: American Pit Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and American Staffordshire Terriers. So, if I reference the words "pit bull," I'm referring to the whole group of dogs.

Second of all, Jay I totally feel you on the issue because Doberman Pinschers are involved in this BS too. It seems that many dogs that are bred with a purpose are coming under fire... German Shepherd Dogs, Rottweilers, Dobermans.. a lot of the "working" dogs.

For anyone reading who doesn't know what Breed Specific Legislation is... Here's a nice Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breed-specific_legislation

Several counties and/or states have already banned "pit bulls." Little Rock, Arkansas is trying to cut down on the people who own Rottweilers, "pit bulls," and mixes by making the license to register those dogs $500. Denver, Colorado has already banned "pit bulls."

Meanwhile, I have been bitten by several dogs throughout my life and NONE of them have been the commonly blacklisted dogs. I got bit by a Dalmation, a few toy breeds, and a Lab.

I think Breed Specific Legislation really stands for Bull **** Legislation

What I think is ****ing hilarious if that the general public doesn't know **** about dogs. Put an uncropped, undocked Doberman in front of people and I bet half of them have no clue what it is. Put a fawn or blue or red Doberman with natural ears and tail in front of people and I guarantee you most of them will think they're mixes. People come up and pet my dog all the time and then ask what he is and as soon as I say Doberman Pinscher, they suddenly are afraid. The general public wouldn't know what an American Pit Bull Terrier was if it came up and smacked them in the face. Any mix of dog that shelters can't figure out, they label as a "pit mix." LOL.

I like to send people this link, where you have to pick the APBT out of all the similar looking dogs, because nobody has a clue. http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html

Oh and one more thing, **** the Humane Society, **** PeTA, **** all of those animal rights organizations. They are abominations. Especially PeTA.

Don't get me wrong, no animal should ever be abused, starved, left to die, etc. but those organizations do more harm than good. Again, especially PeTA.

They're currently trying to ban cropping and docking in our country. They've already succeeded in parts of Canada and overseas.

Ban bad owners, not breeds

Well, thought I was done for now but nope.. gotta comment on this too.

That's not bad dogs, that is bad ownership. That has nothing to do with those dogs being APBTs. You never, NEVER, NEVERRRR leave a kid unattended with dogs EVER whether it's a Golden Retriever or a Great Dane or a Pug or a Yorkie. I hope that woman gets nailed to the wall for being a moron. Gee, lemme leave my baby in his carrier on the floor No one's fault but her own. Dogs are animals.
