BMW for me, it's a logical choice but the X is a great car

I looked at all the cars around $45,000 when looking for my next car last spring.

The Evo won my heart. With modifications any car can be made to be a performer. But I love the "wtf is that" factor that comes with the Evo. Everyone on here obviously knows what it is when spotted, but people still ask me every now and then "what is that?". A guy in a new M3 rolled up next to me in the Fall and was looking at my car up and down, then told me "sweet car man". I think a base model X looks pretty crappy, though. To me my car looks perfect, but it's far from done.

But I'm 20. Big wings, racing seats, and tons of JDM aftermarket parts makes me happy. I don't know what makes you happy. Downside is the interior. I don't care about it, but the BMW is much better in that aspect, as well as paint quality probably.

I'm making the same decision. You insurance rate will depend on far too many factors beside just your age. 25 is the supposed 'magic' number, but I find mine went down after I built decent credit.

e90post.com and evoxforums.com/evolutionm.net are good resources. They have a ton of info to research. Both can be easily modified for nice power with some tweaks.

From what I have read they both have issues whether its multiple fuel pumps and turbo failure going on the BMW to recalls on the fuel pump relay (running lean)/paint issues on the X.

I am not sold on the reliability of either as I expect at least 100K from a car turbo or not so I am waiting for awhile.

I think when you put together everything, the 1 is just a more solid car. Sure the X may handle better but how much of your drive are you flying through wicked corners, furthermore even if you could, other traffic won't let you. Take into account for both cars

Price
Features
Insurance
MPG
Warranty
Fit and Finish
Power
Handling
Style
Comfort
Resale

You'll also never have to worry about police looking at you twice in a 135i, I never get looks in my car, it's just not suspicious, even low, loud, and tinted out.

I'd get the BMW but then again look at my user name lol. Like every one said they are much more comfy. The ride is much better. There is one thing nobody mentioned though, BMW's bulletproof warranty. You could mod it and they won't care. They will replace your brakes, 1st clutch, etc etc all on the house, try that with your Evo.

I say Evo X for sure. u have the Ducati for ur impractical fun. The 135 is a great car but its quite small where as the Evo is a functional sedan with plenty of space. and as far as speed goes, bith cars have good mod potential. but the evo has more u can do for less money and its AWD so u can be all good in snow. BMW RWD....not so much.

if u find urself wanting a bimmer but feeling the 135 is too tiny or high on insurance. look at the 335xi sedan. or if ur feeling kinda different, get the 335D. 265hp and 405tq stock with far more with some relatively easy mods and 30mpgs....not bad at all.

but between those original 2, the evo hands down.

I'd go with the 135i. Still, I understand you're 23 years old and have enough to pay one of these off? Even if I were making money like that, I'd get a used car. No point in buying new. Especially in this economy. You only think your job is secure. You're young yet. Find a used 135i if you must have a late and great car and pay decent payments. Otherwise, buy new and be stuck with a nasty car payment for the next few years that will eventually start to piss you off. Someone in here said they're 20 and getting an Evo next spring. What do you do for work? I am 25, I must obviously be doing something wrong...

^Definitely advantages of buying new (trade your car in that day, dealership financing power, leave with a warranty, maintenence contract, and a spotless car). If he buys a $40k car and has $5k discount or trade, and covers the tax in cash, his payment would be a not-so-nasty $511 x84 months @ 5.99%. There is also a lease offer on the 135i: msrp $42k, $5k down, $409/month x36. All you need is credit and your John Hancock, and your driving a brand new BMW. All I am saying is there are ways for those who aren't making $40k+ a year to do it.

Anyhow... I'd like to add another point of view.

The cars are two completely different animals as you all know.

The evo X is nice, but for the money the 135I is better looking, classier, and I'm sure built better. It wouldnt be a bad route because I wouldnt want to mod and void a warranty. I feel like the X would just be more of the same... Dumping money into mods never satisfied, and always wanting more. The 135I would be satisfying, comfortable, sylish. I'd be happy just throwing some O.Z's on it and calling it a day.
it's generally at age 25 it goes down, and with those cars your insurance will go up.
adding an audi a3 to our insurance policy almost doubled it.

i would check with your insurance on quotes as well as shopping around for new quotes at this moment. I remember the m3 for me to have in philly was way too much money

i love people bringing up snow. the only time anyone should be on the roads is when everyone can be on the roads. if there is 6" of snow on the ground an Evo is going to be as poor a choice to have out there than anything else.

remember, awd gets you moving... but it doesn't help you stop. besides... i'm pretty sure you can drive rwd in the snow w/o an issue if you drive smart

i agree with this guy -
Financial experts recommend spending no more 12 to 15% of your after-tax monthly income for car payments. To calculate how much car you can afford, multiply your monthly net pay (take-home pay after taxes are deducted) times 15% (.15). Your car payment should not exceed this general guideline.

back when i was a broke college student buying a new honda civic was a stupid mistake i learned from. I paid it off and drove it for three more years without payments and saved all the money working to do other stuff.

not bad- i think some people here have cars that consume about 70% of their income

to the OP
don't forget looking at CPO cars with huge warranties.

my next car will probably be an audi a5 quattro once they come into the CPO lot. I might lease, but that takes the fun out of modding the car.

i wish it was less... but the srt ain't selling like i was hoping it would haha. if i get rid of that i will get my car payments down to less than 15%, which will be really nice.

its bad enough though... on top of all my other self inflicted bills haha

My car is already over half paid off $20,000 paid off so far. Bought it 6 months ago.
And I got 0% financing.

The mods, though... that's a big part of my income.

How about the MR Touring that is out now. More creature comforts such as leather lined Reacaros and sunroof. Not to mention less racer boy trunklip. It is also the fastest USDM Evo X in stock form.

I beg to differ with everything u just said. Awd is worth it's weight in gold in bad weather (not only snow). Why should u be stuck where u are in bad weather? In the last big storm I was able to go out and have fun but at the same time help numerous people who were stuck get themselves out. My car is flawless in the snow and I know the same is true of the evo. U just need to know how to drive in snow and u won't have problems.

And rich. Ud be smarter to look slightly used. Cars like a year old that still have most of their warrenty. That way ur not paying that extra 20% of the cars original msrp.
