Thermal imaging

Thermal imaging would be considered photography right? Maybe I'll take some pictures this weekend with the HD IR camera.

That is very cool. What exactly are you using to take them?

Using a FLIR infrared camera to take the pictures. The cameras are $50-70k (or so I'm told). It's definitely interesting to see all of the crazy things you can pick up with it. You can actually see the heat from people's footprints as they walk around.....or if someone places their hand on a wall the heat transfered will leave a silouette for quite some time.

I've got photos somewhere of probevette writing on a wall with his finger which leaves a nice message written in heat.

Does it just take pictures? This would be nice to have if it could do video to shoot during dyno runs to see hot spots on supercharged cars, $50k is a little much though.

I've never done any video with it but it does have a video out.....so you could use a DVR to record all of the live video off of the camera. Definitely a great idea...I may actually try this at some point.

Yea....$50-70k is pretty steep but for preventive maitenance it's pretty amazing. We use the camera for scanning transmission lines, distribution lines, & substations for a very large power company.

Edit: Totally forgot....I just picked up a Archos 605 wifi from blockbuster for $50*** this week, I'll give it a try with that and let you know how it turns out!

***normally they are $100 but they were having a store closing sale

reminds me of splinter cell, where you can look at keypads and tell what order buttons were pressed. how long do foot prints last? can it see bodies through walls? or animals in the ground? if you still have your hands on this you should take a picture of a jet taking off a runway, that would be a sick shot.

That would help out on my car, haha.

Interesting photos though. That must be one hell of a camera, as you were saying!

It really depends how long you are standing still before you walk away. The more heat that is transfered the longer the footprint stays. If you're just walking by, it only lasts about 20-30 seconds. If you're standing still before you walk....maybe a minute or two?

As for seeing through walls, the camera effectively sees "heat", so it dosent really see through walls etc since your body heat wouldent radiate through a wall. Same for animals in the ground.

Maybe post up some more pics and video later today!

I think I'll take the WRX for a spirited drive and get some engine shots afterwards.

When I'm out line scanning I can always see like 10 squirrels all hanging out in the woods or a bird standing on a distribution pole.

Took my car out for a drive Sunday....got home and forgot I promised to take some pics. My car had been sitting for maybe 20-30 minutes when I took these pics but they still turned out pretty nice. Really shows how good of a job the cobb air box does of keeping hot air out.

Here are some neat pics I took a while back. Hector (aka probevette) was gracious enough to model for these photos.

It's hard to tell in this pic, but he is putting his hand on the bumper of a car that is up on a lift.
