TST Runners thread

There was an old thread about running but it didnt really catch on...could be because people on here really dont run, but trying to revive the discussion.
I just started running 3 weeks ago. So far, its a love/hate relationship.
I started at 1.5 miles a day (after rest when I was getting sore) in the beginning and upping it a 1/4 mile each week as long as health permits. Right now, I am doing 2 miles a day, but finding that my struggles are in the breathing and technique aspects of running. I have been running at a track and taking breaks when I feel necessary.
Anyways, does anyone else on here run, want to start, or have any pointers/tips for the newb? Or just post general running discussion.

i've been running 3 miles a day for the past month, 5-6 days a week. i played field hockey in high school so i'm pretty used to running. i started off doing a mile and a half and worked my way up. i'm doing it to get back in shape and i've lost 20 pounds so far so i guess it's working. i do interval running, which is supposed to keep burning calories way after your done running. for example, i'll do a fast walk, jog, sprint and repeat. it gives you a killer workout and a nice break when you're ready to die. i smoke half a pack a day and have no trouble with my breathing, i don't know what's wrong with me.

I am not really running to lose weight. I gained weight over the past year but it was needed. Trying to keep the weight on but just tone up a little while running and doign other exercises. I am hoping to get to a solid point of 3 miles per day in a few months and shooting for a goal and joining a 5k run in November to see if I can do it.
I never was into running but its already been a pretty good experience overall.
I am not sure why, but I am still having trouble with the breathing...I have read up on the correct ways to breathe but its hard to put the words read into action while running.
Any suggestions on breathing properly???

well running will definitely tone you up, especially if you're lifting a little bit as well. i always follow the breathe in through your nose, out through your mouth rule. i think if you try to take so much air in through your mouth, you just start huffing and puffing. since i do interval though, i get those few minutes to get my breathing back when i do the fast walk so that probably helps as well.

I just started running as well. Its really a great workout and you get fast results. I normally run for a few blocks, switch to walking and run again. Its all hills around where I live, so you really cant do it any other way.
Im doing it mostly for the health benefits and hopefully to tone up and loose a few pounds.

I run enough at work but I'm still fat. Running doesn't work =(. I also climb a LOT of stairs and lift a lot. I'm still fat.

I got back into running over the past month. I'm doing about 4-5 times a week. Yesterday I did 2 miles in a 30 minutes...pretty stoked about that. Everyday I try to do a little more.

3rdgenmr2girl, the smoking will catch up to you eventually. I used to smoke a pack a day, a bowl or two of hookah with a friend or a couple cigs bummed here and there. But It doesnt really bother me that much.

I was running every Tuesday with the local running shop on their weekly runs until I started working again in late July. I was doing roughly 6-7 miles at a shot. Once I get back up to school, I should start up again. I enjoy running with a group more, though... it forces me to push myself.

I'd hit up a running store for a proper set of shoes, as everyone has a different set of feet that require a different shoe.

If you're willing to make the trip from Bucks, the North Wales Running Company (Main Street of North Wales) is my store of choice, good selection of shoes, and Scott (the owner) knows his stuff. Prices are pretty competitive, too, and last time I checked, he had a few shoes on clearance for 30-40 bucks.

Yeah I figured I would hit up a decent running store to get a simple pair of good sneakers. The people that I have talked to at the track really stressed shoes and pacing myself...not trying to overdue anything if your not ready for it because it could be more damaging.
