personally i would get the d700. investing in bodies sucks, so why take every step along the way, sometimes it's best to suck it up and jump a few steps. Lenses will always be there and they hold their value a lot better than a body, and are more affordable then a new body. Also if you plan on keeping the d50 you won't have a gap in your gear, you'll just have to use both bodies until you complete your gear on the new body. which is what i've been doing until i have some extra cash for a FF wide angle. I think getting the d300 is going to end up being a waste of money since you will eventually end up in the FX world anyway. Might as well join the big leagues and play ball instead of spending the money to practice more.

it's a tough decision, i just look at it like everything else in life, if you are going to do it, you might as well do it right the first time. pull the trigger, take the plunge, and use time to expand your gear for the new body.

so youre saying that i should get the d700 and basically only shoot in either 50mm or 70-300 for the next year? I planned on offseting the cost of whatever body by selling the d50 setup but i guess that is out if im going d700 and need a spare body to shoot.

I'm a little fuzzy on it, but arent the D200 and D300 pretty similar? If I remember correctly that they are, I'd say you should either do a D200 ($550 or less used probably?) for the time being before taking the jump, or you should go for the D700 which is substantially more.
Or maybe my memory is bad and you can ignore the info above.

D300 is definitely worth the money over the D200. People like to say the D200 looks better at 200 ISO but that's a bunch of people that spend wayyyy too much time on computers and not taking pictures. 51-pt AF, 3 stops better ISO, much better LCD, better viewfinder, etc.
That said, the 200s are suuper cheap. Even the 300s are getting to be around $900 used these days for higher-shutter copies.

yea, from what i have read the d200 to d300 jump is pretty substantial. i did toss around the d200 idea, but in reality its high iso performance really isnt better than the d50...some places say it is equal or even worse.

i would be getting a sturdier body and higher fps, but the downgrade in iso wouldnt make it worth it.

if you guys see any d300's for sale let me know. im only really on fredmiranda so i only have that place to base my prices off of.

i think since i am leaning more towards d300 i ma as well just suck it up and wait to see what is announced. maybe Nikon will make the d300s worth upgrading to, or even then d300 prices should drop

If you were going to keep your old body, i would say yea. But if you plan on selling it, then the D300 is probably the better choice.

personally speaking, I feel that me getting the 40d was a waste of money and when i upgraded from the xt i should have gone straight to the 5d. The jump between xt and 40d was substantial, but i still felt i fell short of my goals. The difference in cost between the new(at the time) 40d and a used 5d was about $500 - $700. which in hindsight would have been well worth the added expense. But none the less i now have 2 bodies and am very happy.

either way good luck and enjoy, a new body is always fun!!!

Now there are hints at a d700x coming out along with the d300s. Additionally, Nikon's release schedule was "leaked" and it is showing a d400 in Q2 2010.

I think my best bet is to grab a d300 (cheaper with d300s release) or a d300s, and flip it sometime next year for either a d400 or d700. I have pretty much accepted that by doing this I will be losing a bit of $, but I think a d400 or d700 upgrade would be worth it

yea, but it will prob lose the hi-iso performance that the d700 currently has due to the increase in MP

Nice! It's all downhill from here.
And re: the Tamron, I've seen some very good samples taken with it. It's nice and light compared to the Nikon beast, too. I love the Nikkor but the Tamron will do a great job, make sure it focusses properly and you're good to go.

yea, its coming used but in "mint condition", but still has warranty info, etc. It's also a version with the built in focus motor so its a little better build quality and should focus a bit more accurately than the screw-type motors (hopefully)

ill test it on my buddies d700 and if it sucks i will ditch the FX idea and write it off as fate lol

anyways, the price was right and i figured out that it was only going to cost like $400 more to go FX so better now than later lol
