Exclamation so my car got broken into : identity theft

so yesterday morning i went out to my car to go to work. when i hop in i notice that all my belongings that were neatly placed in compartments were all thrown about the interior. the deck lid was loose, the fuel cap was popped, the spare change from my little holder was all gone.....o wait, my wallet is missing too......crappppp

strangely, there was no sign of forced entry, no damage to anything. thank god. also, i didnt have any credit cards in my wallet, just license, debit card, and.....o ****, my social security card!

my life ended. if someone has your ss number, youre done.

so i call the police, i go to the station and report it, blah blah blah. i tell the office at the complex, they take a copy of the report. i start calling experian, equifax, and transunion and tell them what happened. they put an identity theft alert on all my accounts. i then had to call all of my credit card companies (there are 7 of them) and tell them to close the accounts. i had to go to my bank and have them close my debit account, recreate an online account and re issue a new debit card (that wont arrive for another week).

i have no money. well, i have money, i just cant access any of it.

i spent the entire day dealing with this, i took the day off from work so it could all get handled immediately. the bank says there have been 2 charges on the debit card since this morning, around 120 dollars. ugh

heres where it gets interesting:
me and my roomate park in line, so whoever is in back, needs to move the car to get the other out. after i returned from work yesterday, i block in my roomate. later that night he moves my car to go out n get food. he returns, puts his car in the back, then puts mine to block him in again.....

he says he locked it, i believe him, but it sounds too fishy. there is no forced entry. i dont know anything about how to steal a car but wouldnt SOMETHING be obvious? a scratch, a ding, a crack on the glass, anything?

sidenote: it was 105 yesterday so i kept the windows cracked when i park it. they were about an inch down. would an inch be enuff room for someone to get something into the door and unlock it? maybe?

the whole thing is weird to me.

so in short, dont keep your social security card in your wallet. and dont leave your wallet in your car. mom has been tellin me to stop doin that since i started driving....i guess i learned my lesson now!

1 inch is more than enough. But don't you have an alarm (even stock?)?

1 inch is enough. i've locked my keys in my car with my window cracked and used a coat hanger to hit the unlock button. sorry to hear, that really sucks.

1 inch is more than enough and you are quite the dumbass for leaving your wallet in your car, especially with the windows cracked and someone else having access to it. Why would you have your SS card in your wallet?????

i steal cars for a living. i can get into anything without you even knowing. that sucks big time man. i lost my wallet while riding my buddys bike a couple weeks ago and i panicked. my license, health card, repo license and gun permit were in there. 2 days later someone drops it off at my moms house with everything intact. lucky i guess.

a inch is a big deal when it comes to some1 wanting to rob a car, or gives them a reason to rob it. if thats what they are out doing, it only takes less than a 1/4 inch to slide a hanger thru, and start tryin to hit the auto unlock, or pull at the handle.

thank you eveyrone for the kind(ish) words. yes i take full fault, i now will not be leaving the windows cracked. i had my ss card in my wallet from last month when i was movin into my new apt i put it there so i had it on me and wouldnt loose it during the shuffle of the move. and the temps are so high here i HAD to leave the windows cracked bc the heat after a 9 hr soak is ungodly. it was 110 today....but i guess i will deal with it now! haha. i had no idea an inch was so much room, i had it "only" an inch so this wouldnt happen, hahahahaha!

shame on me. the good news is that the two charges that were made on my debit card have been traced. it was at the grocery store down the street, i talked to the store director and gave him the exact amounts and the 12 hr window in which it happened and he is looking for it. once we know the transaction times, we now have video time to scan at. who knows, its better than not trying at all *shrug*

The bank should be able to tell you the approximate time that the transaction was made.
