Olympus Pen E-P1 - yesss!

I've been wanting something like this for a long time.. I wish it was FX, but let's take it one step at a time.

Basically it's a really small 4/3 sensor dSLR. The size of a compact with a sensor much, much larger. If this isn't outrageously expensive I'm getting one -- ideal walk-around, party, travel camera. And with the 20mm f1.7 pancake prime it'll be awesome. Equivalent of a 40mm, speed of a f1.7, DoF of a f3.5 on FX. Yes!

Thoughts?

I've read it'll be around $900, which is pretty nuts, but it's a niche market item. 720p video, G1 autofocus, etc, but I don't really care about that stuff since it's finally a reasonably sized sensor in something that isn't so conspicuous. With the pancake primes it'll be pretty cool... I hope it's more like $600 though.

pretty sweet, idk what that all means but it would be pretty cool to have a dSLR that you can have in your pocket basically.

The G10 is a nice compact, but the sensor is way smaller. High ISO performance is sucky, and playing with DoF is pretty much impossible. This is a 4/3 sensor, which is about half the size of full frame 35mm, and muuuch bigger than any compact sensor.

And yeah, it takes interchangeable lenses. Part of the coolness is that with an adapter (they're cheap) it will accept pretty much any 35mm lens ever -- Canon FD, modern Canon, Nikon, Leica rangefinder, Olympus, Minolta, etc. I'm more interested in whatever small micro-4/3 specific primes they come out with, but it's cool you can use old glass you already own.

it's cool, i guess i just don't see the need for it. let alone mating a canon ef lens to that kind of negates the compactness of it. i think it would be pretty hysterical to put a 70-200 on that little thing though hahaha..

I agree, any FX zoom is kind of worthless on this thing, even though that would make it a 140-400/2.8 with the DoF of a 140-400/5.6. It would be goofy as hell.

It's more for people who want a compact that still is capable of things previously only available on SLRs... kind of a modern rangefinder. It'll be more used for wide to short tele fast primes.

Look at how tiny!

For travel, I'll throw that camera in my pocket along with another lens and be good to go. In-body image stabilization, 720p video with sound, and my favorite part is the external viewfinder. I wish this would come out before I leave for vacation but oh well. Pretty cool!

I am ampinggggg

The body is going to be expensive, probably around $900. But the 17/2.8 is only around $100, and hopefully the 20/1.7 comes before too long. Even that 14-42 zoom looks pocketable. But apparently the external viewfinder is going to be around $170 which sucks... oh well. It looks great. I want one in black.

ISO 100-6400, I really doubt anything above 1600 will be remotely usable from a 4/3 sensor, but if 1600 looks okay I will be more than happy.

I don't care if I'm the only person excited about this, haha

Press release and stuff; http://www.dpreview.com/news/0906/09...olympusep1.asp
720p video samples; http://www.dpreview.com/news/0906/09061602ep1movies.asp
Image samples; http://www.dpreview.com/gallery/olympusep1_preview/

Pricing is supposedly $899 for the camera, 17/2.8, and external VF. That's what I'm getting.
$749 body only.
$799 w/14-42 kit lens.

Sample pictures don't look that great, but I have been wanting a good point and shoot for a while. I think I'd go with the G10.
