You guys get to play with the mkII yet?

Picked up a 5DmkII several months back but never got around to actually using it on a shoot. I recently invested in a Red Rock Field Bundle (rig) which is designed to make the 5D more (video) shooting friendly.

I can say from the first shoot I used it on it has indeed helped tremendously. I can down steady the camera while pulling focus with the attached micro follow focus.

Downsides are it makes the camera much more cumbersome and heavy. Several times while shooting the bicep on my right arm started to cramp up from the constant load. Something that has only happened previously after long flying sessions with the glidecam.
Additionally it does attract a lot of attention. I was asked on three different occasions by various bridesmaids about the camera. I argued with a friend about this but I suppose that would indeed count as "more obtrustive" simply from it's aesthetics.

I see that Red Rock has smaller kits now available at NAB. The positive thing about that is my kit comes with all the accessories to customize your rig. I'm planning on downsizing it (removing the cage) and simply using it for it's shoulder mount and follow focus. As it is it's quite front heavy and would need a heap of weight on the rear only further bloating the rigs's size/weight.

I'm going to continue to experiment with it but wanted to share my results in the form of some raw footage set to music. So no this is not an edit.

Jeaaaaaaalous uggggh. 2k though, god damn. I'd only be interested in it for the follow focus.

Have you ever tried to shoot video with the mkII- it's tough. As soon as you introduce movement (ie shake) the rolling shutter make the footage look like jelly. So I need the rig for stability as well.

The follow focus is nice and is an investment I plan on getting a 35mm adapter for my XH-A1s, and simply use my current L glass on it. Red Rock is releasing a unit that allows you to manually control your EOS lens iris WHILE attached to the 35mm rig. Should be released this week at NAB.

PS Checked out your stuff- you are doing some good work man- good job. What adapter are you using with your DVX?

Thanks for sharing this! Lots of these shots are really nice, good job controlling the jelly. When I was playing with one I had trouble with stability, especially since I have no background in video. Looking forward to seeing more.

I don't know alot about these cameras at all I just started DSLR less than a year ago. I do know that I want a high def video recorder really bad and to start learning how to take some nice video.

Some of you guys might remember Stillmotion on Vimeo. They have a video all about the 5D and there rigs. I thought was pretty impressive. Here is the link.

Yeah without a rig you can pull the camera away from your body with the neckstrap on to create a bit of stability. I don't like the static look/feel of video on sticks so I'd much rather have the organic feel that handheld gives. The rig eliminates enough shake to avoid exploiting the CMOS jello effect. If I want really fluid movement I'll fly the glidecam.

Patrick is actually a friend of mine. I've known him for about 4 years. Spoke to him on the phone a few times and he has even referred me weddings here in the states (on the eastern seaboard).

Patrick actually isn't a big fan of the 5D. His standard rig is a Sony EX-1 w/ Brevis adapter. He also flies with a bonified ($15k) steadicam rig rather than the cheap knock-off "glidecam" kits.

Speaking of EventDV.tv articles- here's a recent one where I'm mentioned: http://link.brightcove.com/services/...id=16720062001 @ 6:42

Shhhh...

Excellent video. Look at how versatile this thing can be. Not everyone gets a videographer for their weddings. This is certainly a nice touch to throw in (or charge a little extra for). How hard is it to take stills with this rig?

I've limited mine to a tripod for the few videos i have taken, but it i've had it on my headrest mount a few times. Nothing of this caliber, but still fun to mess around with.

With the full rig, next to impossible. However I've reassembled the rails and accessories to down-size it a bit and think it would be possible to take stills while still on the rig- so long as the live view feature was used.
