Buying non-OEM accesories

Yes, this has to do with photography. I was just wondering what people think about buying non OEM accesories for their cameras. I shoot with an XTi, and I was looking at stuff like remote triggers, extra batteries, battery grips, lens hoods, etc. I bought one accesory for my 18-55 from eBay before, it was a hood, and it has worked fine so far, has the non-reflective texture on the inside of it, fits great, and looks to be the same size and shape as the Canon one.

I was just wondering if anyone else here buys accesories like those from eBay and is happy with them, I understand some things its best to spend more money on like waterproof cases, but I just want to get some opinions before I have to buy something twice.

Guess you can say that I'm a name brand whore. Most of my camera stuff is well known brands. I try not to cheap out and buy cheap camera equipment, my reasoning is that I rather spend more and buy something once then have to buy the right piece of equipment a year or two down the road and spend even more money.

The only thing(s) i would say I cheap'd out on where, one battery for my D50 that I hardly used, and screen protectors for the D50 and D300. Every thing else is like Nikon equipment.

Depends on the accessory item.

my stuff is pretty much all name brand now and thats probably what i'll keep buying unless its something i dont really care too much about but just want. i've bought some non-oem stuff before like a grip when i had my xt, some hoods, and batteries and never had problems with anything.

For what it's worth, battery grips are generally in the no-go category.

Right now I am looking for a ring mount for my 70-200

BH has real canon ones for 150
Ebay has knockoffs for 25 shipped

Both made from aluminum.....is the real thing really worth it?

Aluminum doesn't mean anything. I can't vouch either way for the ebay product but why risk it? Probably a $15 difference. Why a tripod ring on the f4 version?

Just keep the weight more balanced while its on the tripod, I still get quite a lot of play at the quick release mount on the tripod with the 70-200 f/4 on my xti...is that link an authentic canon piece? I can't imagine it being one since its still priced $110 under BH.

Ugh, that's a third party ring, my bad. I saw white and thought "must be Canon." Editing for hours and hours late at night is bad for coherence.

It might work, it might not. I'm sure there's one third-party ring out there that works well. If you're willing to potentially lose the $25 then go for it. I personally would put that money towards a better tripod head.

I might go that route as well. I'll put this on the POTN site and see what people say, thanks for your input!

If in the back of your mind you're worried that the mount might 'fall off' then it's not worth buying.

your going to put $1k worth of equipment onto a $25 mount? think about it. It's only has to fail once for you to be out $1k.

I buy name brands, I had a camera fall from a tripod before, it wasn't a good experience.

I got confirmation on POTN from several members that they own the third-party pieces with no problems, even after a year of use so I will try it.
