Thanks for the links, my eyes already hurt from reading those and a hundred other Doberman resources! We've been researching for months now, and are finally looking for our actual breeder.

I think perhaps I talked to your fiance already and referred her to some specific breeders - but I'm willing to chat about anything related to Dobermans in order to help you find the right breeder. Kudos for the research, PS.

Glad you are doing so much research! I would just look at those breeder listings and start visiting some. There are quite a few local ones. You want the breeder to do health tests on all breeding stocks, (normally hips, eyes, and whatever other issues Dobies are prone to). You want a breeder that doesnt really breed more then 1-2 litters/year. Most decent breeders only breed because they want a puppy or a show prospect. Look for breeding stock that has letters before and after the names, (shows the dogs can do more then just conformation).

Yes, that was her. I just read the conversation and it sounds like she has you up to speed. Thanks so much for taking the time to share you knowledge, let me know if I can return the favor on Subarus

That's where we are now, just starting to contact breeders to try and get a feel for which might be the right one. I didn't know about the letters though, I'll keep an eye out for that. Thanks!

I agree rescues are a great way to go if you have the right situation and right home for a rescue dog. Not every family is fit for a rescue.

I can also put you in contact with Doberman rescues if you're interested in that. I have no problem recommending reputable breeders and/or rescues.

i dont understand why people think so differently of 'rescue dogs.' i dont even like that label. it makes them sound bad. just because a dog ends up in a shelter does not mean it will kill your kids and take a dump on your carpet. sure there are dogs in shelters that were raised wrong, but a lot of them are also runaways as well as dogs that people just had to get rid of. you can find the sweetest cutest nicest dogs in shelters. before you go to a breeder, just take a walk through your local spca or shelter. save a life and save some money.
