so i got offered a Valentine V1 radar detector for $200. Worth it?

My buddy at work has a valentine v1 radar detector which he has no use for, so i asked him how much. He said $200

Its good condition, only thing wrong is that its missing the knob, but i can still turn it with the metal piece. I heard mixed things about radar detectors useless and amazingly helpful.

I drive from west chester to Philly once a week on 202 and the turnpike,a nd i plan on going to a road trip to pen state main soon.
What is your imput? Should i get it?

Have you used this radar before?

INFO:

This is what it gave me when i typed in the serial number.

V1 Description: Radar circuitry known in-house as V1.7 gives high performance on all radar bands. Also,it remembers your “mode” setting when shut off. Has stack of four LEDs on front panel for band identification. Front and rear laser.

Upgrade Recommendation: While this version is not quite up to today’s V1 standard for Ka, it’s almost always good enough, and always better than detectors from other makers. X and K performance is excellent. Upgrading merely to improve radar performance is not cost effective, in my opinion, unless you’re concerned about the POP Mode operating in your area. Upgrading does bring other benefits, including our latest laser warning (front and rear), which outperforms the competitors by a wide margin, and POP Protection. Also, you'll get the new Euro Mode.

I havent personally, but as long as it works, $200 is great for those. How about you buy it for $200, then I buy it from you for $205? :D

it is a steal, but i think they are illegal in some states. I dont remember where exactly, i think jersey is included. I have a small cobra one that is underneath my Delphi Navi. I dont really use it unless on the highway but i dont really speed much to begin with.

I have one. It has saved me so many times, it has paid for itself many times over. Ask for the serial number so you can check how new the software is. I think the newest is version 1.8 (upgrade for $85, I think).

To get updates and what not you'll have to send it in to valentine, I forget the process but you're probably gonna need info from your friend. It's a great unit, and definitely not illegal in New Jersey, lol, so you don't have to worry about that.

Do it. The single best radar detector that is on the market.

And the only state I know of that it is illegal in close to the tristate area is in VA.

No, THIS is the best radar detector on the market.
http://www.k40.com/

FWIW, I wouldn't get it or any radar detector. Nowadays most officers know how to use the radar guns properly so by the time they get you and the detector goes off it's too late. Plus if he/she sees a radar detector in your car when they pull you over you might as well have called their mother a whore.

But if it will really make you feel better, then go for it. It's the second best radar detector out there.

Don't forget though, most local cops don't use radar...only state troopers in pa at least. Although I think the valentine does laser as well

I have to disagree with you there, in Jersey at least, the cops just sit all over the place with their radar constantly running. I pick them up for what feels like miles before I can even see them with my $80 Circuit City detector.
