My VZW contract ends at the end of December and I think its time to step my game up.
I know there are a lot of badass options out there now and/or being released soon... who's the cell phone guru out there and what should I be looking at?
Good call quality is expected, but excellent and easy to use web and email are also high on the list... the reason I'd be moving to one of these fancier phones in the first place.
I've had my eye on the iPhone for a long time but am concerned about call quality. I know the G1/Android is being released soon but I haven't looked into it much. I know that there are other phones out there too that are holding it down... so whats the lowdown?
Lets hear your opinions on whats good right now or what is coming out soon...

Verizon's coming out with the Blackberry Storm. The first touch blackberry. Apparently its coming late November. I was talking to someone at Verizon last week about it. I'll probably get it since my contract has been up since August.

The Bold isn't available in the US. Only Canada and France I think.

The Storm looks cool, but the only phone I would trust thats only a touch screen would be the iPhone.

When my VZW contract expires, I'm leaving and going to AT&T so I can get an iPhone.

I just saw a commercial for the first time last night for the Storm.

Nick has a palm (I forget the model #), and as far as I know, he loves it.

I am with AT&T and plan on getting an iphone when I can upgrade in November.

Yeah the iPhone does so many things so awesome, but I'm just surprised by what I've heard about the call quality... its like they forgot that its supposed to be a PHONE. Still, the iPhone is probably the frontrunner right now just because of all it can do... and I'm just gonna stay optimistic that they will continue to work out the quirks as time goes on.
The Storm looks interesting too... I wont be buying till mid-late December so I have some time to see what happens when these are released...

I have the iphone and I love it. The call quality is good and I never had a problem. Everything on the phone is amazing.

My favorite app for it is Dynolicous. It tells you your cars HP, 1/4 mile time and 0-60. Its pretty accurate too. Got the same reading on the 1/4 as i did when I ran at atco.

Ummmm call quality? i never had a problem with dropping calls or anything. my iphone works fine and i know atleast 6-7 people with em who never had a problem

iPhone FTW. I have had the 1st Gen for close to a year now and love it. My 3G will be showing up here at work hopefully this week. I have had the least amount of problems with it than my previous Treo 755p (Sprint), or any of the other PDA's spanning AT&T and Verizon. I am not too far from you, and my signal has improved coming from Sprint, not nearly as many dropped calls, I would say I may have dropped 5 calls in the passed year.

From what I have seen of the Bold, it is nice for a BlackBerry, but still not up to snuff IMO, and the last I heard it's release was delayed yet again http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/1...ackberry-bold/.

The Thunder/Storm looks like it should be interesting with a pressure sensitive screen and all that. http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/1...-and-vodafone/ Blackberry's just do not impress me at all. I deal with a ton of them at work, and all of the PDA's for that matter. And the iPhone still has me wrapped. It still has its downfalls (unless you jailbreak it). But overall I would say it is the best bet and most sturdy.

I have not looked too much into the G1 at all, but from a quick search T-Mobile has said there have already been 1.5 million pre-ordered already. With it being an OS's first release I would give it some time to grow/be patched. But until the Bold/Storm comes out and I actually can't say yay or nay on either. Although here are some good sources for mobile and other cool nerdy things.

Nice OS, not such a great phone. Hold out there will be better phones running Android on better carriers. It's only a matter of time.

HTC has a few phones coming to different providers.The Touch diamond looks good.

Don't just look at the phone, but also the provider that has the phone. The G1 looks nice, but IMO T-Mobile service is not as good as AT&T and they are lacking with their 3G deployment. To me data service is more important in a personal phone, since I don't use the voice function that much.

Barry (S4toSTi) has an iPhone and is very techno-savvy we'll call it, and since 3G has some out I just think his complaints have echoed loudly with me. Good to hear it sounds like it may not be a widespread issue though. What I had thought was that when 3G is on, call quality drops because they share the antenna signal. Apple released firmware to try and fix this but I never heard a resounding 'yes' that it was taken care of.
And I've heard the same about the G1/Android... the OS has a lot of potential, but the phone leaves room to grow. I'm sure they'll improve on it with the next phone or two.
The iPhone has been on my mind for a while now, I just knew there were some other nice phones out there too and didn't want to pass anything by.

the one thing that is really ridiculous with saying "there is room for it to grow, something better is coming out or will come out" etc... is that can be said every year.

I've never had an issue with t-mobile... and the iphone nor the blackberry really interest me.

its not whats about to come out in 2-3 years... its about whats out now. whats available to me now?

the G1 seems to fit the bill nicely for me. I've got a samsung trace... its just a phone (sure, it was the slimmest phone available when I purchased it 2 years ago and still might be)

The G1 being $179 for all it comes with sounds like a good deal, considering the same phone 2 years ago would have been twice as much.

still deciding whether or not i want to upgrade... i don't really need to... this Trace has been beaten to hell and not a single issue with it, the "paint" on it is all messed up, and some of the plastic is cracked and it works flawlessly. Just ready for something new w/ actual web access... always good to have
