300hp stock?

i read that using just a few bolt on mods (MBC exhaust intake & tune) you could achieve 300hp? Now im only looking to get around 300hp out of my 1g fwd laser, but i dont want to have the damn thing do a crank walk on me. Any suggestions on the proper way to achieve 300hp without having to drop thousands(more than 2-3k) or risking the sacrifice of my engine?
I was thinking a professional tune with some bolt ons, but i am completely new to the dsm scene. so i need some good advice so i dont wind up buying some ****ty parts or make any life altering mod's to my new investment. I just want to run 300hp and use it as my DD.

1g's don't crank walk and those numbers are way off.

DsmRob 09-16-2009 06:13 PM

Since your laser is a 91 it should have the 6 bolt engine in it, they can handle 400-450hp easy. To achieve 300 hp, a common setup is running an evo 3 16g turbo w/ supporting mods.

Read, reasearch, read some more, then mod intelligently. Join good forums like DSMtalk and serch out their massive library. Rob reccomended a primo street set-up with the 16G and supporting mods that will net you an easy 300hp. Also, forget anything that you think you know about DSMs. I'll give you the basics: Change your water pump and timing belt ASAP, don't vent your BOV unless your set-up enables you to, crank-walk can happen to any engine, and it's totally blown out of proportion, Maintenence ASAP.

maint is done the first thing i did was water pump timing belt along with the other obvious things
here is my journal link

oh and thank you for giving me some faith in dsm's lol i was growing a little skeptic

DsmRob 09-16-2009 06:43 PM

I would also do a compression test to see what kind of shape your engine is in.

Take your time. Too many people buy a car (any tuner car) and want to dump thousands of dollars right away and have something just as fast and just like the "other" guy. The problem is the "other" guy has been working on his car for 6 years working out the kinks as he went along and now has something worth looking at. Take your time ..... and have fun along the way.

thats my plan, i dont have thousands to throw away right now anyway

oh and i found this thread helpful

Bingo! Talk is the ****!

BlkWhtTSI 09-17-2009 12:41 PM

with these mods 300hp is possible do mods in this order
-safc
-walbro fuel pump (255) do the first three at the same time (will cost maybe 3-400)
-boost controller (set to 18 psi)
-intake with K&N filter
-exhaust (turboback, high flow cat or test pipe)
-FMIC (doesnt have to be big)
-big 16g
- ACT 2100 clutch kit (ill have one up for sale soon has miles but works great)
- Better tires (I like Toyo or Kuhmo)
I'll estimate total cost not including labor will be about hmmm 2,300

that should get you smiling very much

I've spent under 1k on performance parts and I'm pretty close to running 12's. You gotta be a smart shopper (and cheap).

italianblaze 09-17-2009 01:23 PM

yeah smart shopper indeed plus almost all of the work will be done by me and my friend

i probably didnt mention on this thread, but it is an automatic that im having rebuilt with an IPT rebuild kit for $650 (not including rebuild kit)
rebuild kit is like $550 but im not going to do the shift kit as i got quoted a price a little to high on the labor for that

BlkWhtTSI 09-18-2009 05:22 PM

you also have to be a good driver too. Rob cant drive for sh*t. lolz just kidding

Congrats on getting your 1g, I had 1 for 13 years and I'll share some pointers. For 300hp fwd heres the list.
550ccinjectors
plugs ngk 7s
vent the pvc with a filter asap-
remove the intake and thoroughly clean
evo16g-no knock offs please
dual stage electronic boost controller-dejon tool/or turbosmart
dejon tool
Fuel-walboro 190lps is plenty
dejon tool intake with a k@n filter/custom 2.5 to 3 inch exhaust
To avoid heatsoak of the ic ,upgrade it to a front mount such as an evo or aftermarket
Intercooler piping should be no bigger than 2.5 inch for good daily driving
Invest in a good set of springs like eibach to help hook all that power up to the ground

Ok so you've changed all this nd guess what its time to tune it, you can easily use an AFC with a laptop and a datalogger program to read the data being sent to the ecu.Let me know if you have any more question i'll be glad to help you out.

BlkWhtTSI 09-19-2009 08:08 AM

i agree with the list above but i would go with the 255 fuel pump. It will provide much more headroom to grow. You know in case 300 changes to 350+
I have a dual stage boost controller and i like it but now with my new setup i can only use one setting, but still have the switch there to change over to the high setting and i wish i didnt. At your desired level i'd say yes get a dual stage but when and if you upgrade I'd suggest a single.

dufflebagboyz 09-19-2009 08:38 AM

basically do what they say.... im doing some mods to my 98 awd talon soon. =]

1g Dsm with 6bolt is one of the quickest car with little money. But if your goal is 300hp get bolt on such as intake, exhuast & mbc and 255lph fuel pump & upgrade to fmic and you should be able to crank up the boost and enjoy the power

There is nothing wrong with 1G 7bolts. Also, forget dual stage boost controllers, just grab a Halman and call it a day.
