quick ? about a Strut Tower Brace

I have a ****ty front strut tower brace and I want to take it off and paint it because its red and looks dumb....do i need to jack up the front end of the car to take it off or can i do with the car sitting on the ground?

Do it with the car sitting on the ground.

Well thats how I did mine.

strut tower brace? i hope the car doesnt fall apart when you take it off... haha.
no really, you should be able to just unbolt it with the car on the ground, hopefully there's not that much movement in your frame / strut towers... if there was there'd be a serious problem.

Just do it on a flat level surface, otherwise your struts/shocks may fall out of place if done while the car is in the air

TROLL 03-10-2006 05:02 PM

ah true... if you dont do it on the ground your struts will fall down out of their mounting surface and will be really really hard to lift and line back up with the knuckle attached at the bottom. i know this because i tried to adjust my camber plates on the alignment rack with my car up in the air... and that was pretty stupid of me.
so yes, on the ground for the win.

Agree with what everybody else said.

Be careful when you bolt it back on, because if you over-tighten the bolts on the strut tops they snap off pretty easily.

also a good point... i think the torque specs on my car are like 12 ft lbs. i tighten them more than that just by feel but i dont go superman on them... cause they will indeed break and that would be teh suxors.

I've broken 3 in the same install once. They didn't sell just the studs so I had to buy entire new upper strut mounts. Don't over tq them.
