Might be picking up a 91 EF hatch, ideas for motor swap/build

yep just like the title says, i might be buying my frist honda. since im on a budget and not looking to spend crazy amounts of money, this offer came up recently and im debating on taking it. ive seen the car, but never really had a chance to look it over. currently, its a 91 si model, sitting on some brand of coils, 15" steelies, red paint but the doors have been swapped and are silver, so i would paint them red to match the car. and it has currently a d16z6 single slammer in it. so now the fun begins, what motor to swap in? im definetly thinking an all motor B series, but in what form? im torn between doing an ls/vtec, gsr b18c1, or crazy b20b swap? what would you guys reconmend and why?
thanks for the input.

Efs are endless with swaps. Do something awesome like an h22 head with h23 block orrr f20 for rwd lol.

f20c or K series w/nitrous.

hmmmmm good ideas, idk i was thinking of keeping it simple, like an ls/vtec with type r cams, and type r trans and callin it day. or boosting the single cammer in it now.
im on a buget and dont wanna break the bank

you can build a fast D for cheap! do it!

sleeper15 06-10-2010 07:20 PM

you want simple and fairly cheap, just do b18c1 swap. or, just boost the d16

JSpecV03 06-10-2010 07:22 PM

im thinking boosting the d16z6 in the car now might be the best bet. sov's ek is boosted on a d16z6 and its retarded fast.

yeah a built/boosted d-series can be done fairly cheap. If you want to get a little bit more original/creative then supercharge an mildly-built ls

i had a issue of Project car magazine, in which they raced a ef with a b16 swap vs a crx with the d16 from the EF, and they did a junk yard turbo setup on the crx.

in the end, the crx beat the b16 ef is a drag race. it also put out more power and torque.

so, i voted for the boosted d-series, then a b18c1 a close second.

booosted b series :D

i'm in the same boat. I just recently bought a 91 dx with a stock motor with blown valve springs and rings. burns oil like a mofo so i'm getting another stock motor. Turbo is a definate possibility. Basically any motor you put in the car will make it faster with little strain on the pocket.

single cam ftw... i mean cmon... look at Aarons car!

Boost the current D cheap. When that pops, get nuts. I like the LS S/C idea.

JDMTyler3326 06-12-2010 08:46 AM

LSV or GSR

Boosted LS. Cheap and efficient. Or boost the z6, great little motor.

gsnar 06-13-2010 10:22 PM

RDseX swap!

JSpecV03 06-14-2010 01:06 AM

these are really good ideas guys, im liking that s/c ls idea.

Honestly for a basic swap I'd just go GSR with bolt ons & be done with it. Try not to make it a big project, have it reliable, fun, & just drive it!
I'm not crazy knowledgeable on Honda's but obviously there pretty simple and in this situation I'd just go with a tried & true setup that is fun with the least amount of headaches or possible problems while still swapping it to gain instant performance.

He gave me this mag; I'm planning a junkyard turbo for my CRX. It's a great article.

I'd personally go for a boosted z6, or a DOHC ZC swap. With the ZC, you get pretty much the same performance of the B16, but without the "headache" of the D to B swap. And both options are reasonably priced.

If I were to go B and didn't care about money, I'd go LS/VTEC. But, on a budget, the LS motor is more than enough to pull you around.
