Exactly as the title says, looking for a R34 skyline GTR. I'm not even sure how much they cost or if we can make them legal here, just looking for info.
Does any nissan guys have any information that would be helpful? Thanks in advance!

There used to be a place out in California called MotoRex but they were shutdown a few years back for providing false crash test information or something. I don't know where you could go now besides just searching ebay for one that is already titled in the US.
*edit to add the MotoRex story*
Recently, a vehicle which came to notoriety is the Nissan Skyline, which was featured prominently in video games, movies and magazines. This vehicle, being exclusively sold in Japan, became an object of interest and in 1999, a California company, Motorex, sacrificed a small number of R33 GTS25s for the purpose of crash testing. They submitted their information to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and petitioned them to allow 1990-1999 GT-Rs and GTSs to be imported, at the condition that they were modified to meet federal motor vehicle safety standards.
Many Skylines were subsequently imported through Motorex. This lasted until late 2005, when the NHTSA became informed that not all 1990 through 1999 Skyline models would perform identically in crash testing. Motorex had submitted information for only the R33, and told the NHTSA that it was sufficient for all R32, R33, and R34 models. According the further review by the NHTSA, only 1996-1998 R33 models have been demonstrated as capable of being modified to meet the federal motor vehicle safety standards. After that, only these 1996-1998 models are eligible for importation. In March 2006, Motorex ceased all imports and Motorex principal Hiroaki "Hiro" Nanahoshi was arrested and held on $1 million bail on financial, kidnapping, and assault charges

I see them once in a while being sold by Jeremy Blackwell of SpeedForSale http://www.speedforsale.com/ He is very highly reliable and the ones he sells are legit and legal DOT approved for use in the U.S. I don't see any on his site now.
IMO these guys are also very reliable and trustworthy http://www.vipimports.com/ They seem to have an R33 GT-R for sale now, but at other times I see all sorts of Skylines there. As you probably know, you just have to keep an eye out for a car like this and get on it as soon as it's available so you can check it out or have it checked out carefully and make an offer quickly or it's gone.
Once in a while I also see private sales of Skylines at places like Supraforums "other cars for sale" but I would rather buy from a reliable dealer who's checked out all the paperwork and details ...costs a little more but the peace of mind would be worth it to me.

I am just curious how you inspect such a car every year? Do they have OBD-II ports since they were from Japan?

^ Doubt it, Japans emissions, hell, even thier gas octane is different from ours.
I THINK, think, they are close to 50 grand, at least. The GTR's are hella rare, and even more so expensive. But man are they badass.

I think they are easier to find in Canada than the states, a guy on another forum just got an 89gts-t, not sure how the GT-R would be

dont feel like reading everyone elses posts so I'll just tell you what I know/what I've heard. I've heard that theres only 1 LEGAL way to get them into the states now, and that is to have the entire thing dissasembled, shipped here, and reassembled, which classifies it as a kit car. The other way I've heard is to just put s14 vin tags on it.

240 vin tags isn't legal. Legally, you can title it here in PA as a vehicle not distributed in the US. However, you cannot drive it as a registered vehicle. It could only ever be a track car or a show car. However, how bad ass would it be to have an autocrossed GT-R? This is giving me ideas....
D, if you are serious.. I can help you out.. PM me.

they cost about 90k now too. I see some legit ones for sale sometimes but for the price I'd rather get a Porsche 996 turbo, and in about a year or 2 a Porsche 997 Turbo

The problem isn't finding, buying, or insuring it.
Its whose gonna fix it (that you can trust) when it breaks....and I mean really breaks.
Nothing worse then gettin your Skyline, driving it 5 miles and it spins a bearing.

Meh, aren't there a few reputable shops that commonly work on RB engines? Yea, I could see an employee possibly thinking about taking some parts if its a shady shop, but there has to be a few shops that are "better" than that, but yea, you pay for it LOL.

Guess its a speculative....I was referring back to a cover car from Turbo Magazine. The story was a midwest guy had a R33 GTR. He just had bought the car and it spun one on the way home.

If you pay $90k for a skyline, you're an idiot. There are ways to get them but they will never be really legal. You may be able to register and insure it, but it will not be EPA or NHTSA legal. So technically, if you get caught and someone knows that, the car can get impounded and crushed. You can register it as a track/show car and then it's legal for a certain amount of time with a lot of restrictions.
And when Motorex was selling R34's for 90k that was "federalized and legal" or so they said.
But you can find them, you can get them, it just depends on how you want to do it. And it's not as expensive as a lot of people on here seem to think. And fixing them will be no problem, they're nissans, everything is pretty much the same. The motor is a motor, it's simple. And the rest is easy. It's just a car.

yea its not like rb parts are real hard to come by anymore. As far as I know though, technically, if its a "kit car", it is 100% legal, just a lot of restrictions. The s14 vin tag thing is, on the other hand, illegal.

Yea, 90K for when Motorex was bringing them. lol@me having a 9-10 year old brochure.
Are the R33's the only "legal" ones now?
And btw, D, R32 > any other GTR other than the new one. Without a doubt.

My friend has a r32 here in PA. He owns a shop and is doing a skyline swap in my brother's Z. It is Titled, registered, and he has Geico insurance, he has sold a few, and can pretty much get any whole car. With the fact that the R35 is coming here it will not stick out as much if you get pulled over. A cop can only ask for your license registration, and insurance, he can't also ask for your DOT, import and legalization papers. My friend had a RHD mr2, got pulled over plenty of times, for speeding and stuff, no issues for the most part.
In the mid 90's the Mercedes G-wagen was imported so much that Mercedes decided do it themselves. If the rich can do it, so can we.

I have heard many stories based on hearsay, but I have never heard that one. For awhile Shaun Morris was only selling R33's.

There was a R33 GTS for sale in northeast philly last year. Some shop was selling it. They even started it for me and when I was sitting in it checking it out....I noticed the welded A pillars... The car was brouht in through canada in 2 sections, then welded back together.
A friend of mine imports skylines in Miami. His dad owns an international shipping company. It's very easy to slip cars through. Although I assume it would be rather difficult, (or even possible at all) to legalize them.

supposively in FL its the easiest to get a car that has been imported legalized. Dont ask me i dont know why but supposively you just need to take it to a county official, i guess like a dmv, and have them over look the car. If they see that its fit to drive and operate perfect on the street they get back to you in 6 to 8 weeks with a FL title. Like i said im only going from hearsay.

Its very easy in florida, just go to Tallahasee (sp?) with the car, and you get the title, if you look most cars that are imported such as s15's gloria's, and all other sorts of RHD cars are all from Florida, its crazy.
