Suspension system for VWs

I don't know much about lowering suspensions for VWs.. I wanna lower my mk4 jetta. I don't wanna spend the money for coilovers so I bought H&R Sport springs, now I'm looking for a good set of shocks/struts. I'm looking into Koni reds... anyone have any experience with Koni reds or yellows? what's the difference? how hard is it to swap the new set up in with stock set up?

sportline coils are really cheap, and from what I have heard they are getting good reviews.... please sell your springs and save for coils, you will be much happier

I expected these responses lol. Does not help me one bit. What do you guys think about Raceland coils? I can afford those lol.

Koni yellows are the way to go. Much better damping than the reds. Bilstein is not a bad choice either.

name a v-dub with springs that handles better than v-dub's with coilovers... You can adjust them perfectly...

threads like this are the reason that everyone makes fun off us mk4 kids..... first off everyone knows if you drive a vw you gotta go low and springs won't cut it. Yes you can get raceland coils and there probably not more than youll pay for a good spring shock/ strut combo.but dont expect to go autox-ing and ish with them.

thanks guy, well sorry for embarassing us "mk4 kids", I was just trying to ask people who have been in the game longer than I have. What's embarassing about that? I'm also a college student working full time, what's wrong with not wanting to spend 2 months pay on a set of coilovers? thanks for all the responses... I'm waiting on a guy selling a set of Koni reds with Vogtlands or another guy selling Koni yellows with Neuspeeds from VWVortex.

I didnt mean to come off like such an asshole. I too am a full time college student working part time so I know what your going through. I dont know how much your set is going to cost you but Raceland coils will run you about 300 w/o installation and they will most likely give you more options than the springs. I figure you daily yours like I do mine so you too are limited by how low you can go so if your just looking to rid yourself of most of the wheel gap and the springs will cost less than coils go for it, but if in the near future your looking to go lower forget the springs and get raceland or one like that.

Keep your springs and call AWE (surprisingly enough they're reasonable on Bilstein prices) for the struts. I have the H&R race w/ Bilsteins on my Mk2 and they are fantastic. Save up for the good coils rather than go the cheap to get low route (you'll regret it later). The Mk4 runs low at the oil pan to start so unless you're gonna get sweet wheels the coils aren't truly necessary. Also buying new Bilsteins (or Koni's) gives you a lifetime warranty too. This way if/when you sell them for coils later you can get some decent coin back. The roads are too sh!tty around here to go cheap on your struts IMHO.

Thanks everyone, I was looking into racelands but I thought hmmm, if I can get new coilovers for less than I would for a set of used struts and shocks, something isn't right. Also I don't plan on slamming it at all considering I only do city driving and Philly streets suck. I bought a set of Koni Reds with Neuspeed races from a guy on vortex for $350 shipped, and my friend and I are going to put it on ourselves. Anyone has experience with swapping suspensions on VWs? how difficult is it? I found a DIY but I don't have too much experience with working on cars so any input would help. Thanks.

install is pretty straight forward once you get the wheels off. the struts were hard to remove on my car, we had to use an air hammer to knock them loose.
As far as racelands, search the mk4 forum on vortex. you'll find anything you need to know. From what i've heard, they good for the money but don't expect them to ride like pss9's

Go on vortex and get something used you can find a killer deal my friend got a set of h&r coils for 300

Based on what we've seen from our customers, I can honestly say that 90% of every customer that purchases lowering springs does end up selling them for a set of coilovers at some point in time after they realize that they aren't happy with the springs. We've heard that "you don't need the adjustability of coilovers" or "I can't afford coilovers", but in reality, there are TONS of affordable coilover setups out there that are both reliable and will get you TONS of adjustability.

We carry just about every lowering spring, shock, cup kit, and coilover setup available for VW/Audi vehicles, so just let us know if there's anything you need!
