Computer Help

So my computer is awesome. And by awesome I mean it totally blows. Its an HP pavilion 7975. I had the hard drive replaced because it sucked hardcore. Now the problem is that when running programs (THAT CAME WITH THE PC) the CPU runs at 100% and eventually crashes and the computer restarts. What can I do to fix this, I can't take it any longer.

how did you swap over the OS to the new hard drive?

Did you ghost it or manual install?

if you had your hard drive replaced and it was not the very exact hard drive that it was replacing, if you just ghosted over (with norton ghost) all your data, the hard drive may have incompatibility issues.

The more you learn about computers the more you learn to understand that they do **** you have no idea why a lot of the time. Just like this. All i can say is

start --> Run --> MSconfig

go to startup and kill what you don't want

then just run a defrag and disk cleanup. Can't really diagnose much without being there

Save what you can. Wipe the hard drive out and install a fresh copy of Windows. You have too much running at once(ie.. in the background it sounds like).

Problem is, if people don't really understand computers they won't understand the concept of a format... You lose EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING.

Time to invest in an external hard drive.

oh i i know what a format does. ok so when i do that msconfig thing i disabled all the startup programs. task manager list was very small. that was good. but it only lets me do that in a selective startup mode or something. so then i have no sound or other things. can i do a normal startup mode and still disable those things, doesnt seem to want to let me do that

Go back in to MSCONFIG and re-enable your sound drivers

Look in the directories they are under and look for one labeled "Soundblaster"/"Audigy" or whatever you have. Basically that controls every program starting up at startup including drivers

This is the dealio. I cannot start it in normal mode AND select certain things. I can only select certain things in the "selective startup mode".

there are a couple possibilities that I can see here...

1) your computer simply does not have enough RAM to run movie maker and anything else...any kind of video editing software will take up a LOT of ram and a lot of processing power. How much ram do you have?

2) your power supply might be on its way out. random restarts are often caused by bum power supplies, and less frequently by overworked power supplies...I know this because it has happened to me and my brother numerous times. How much power can your power supply put out? 200-watts? 350-watts? anything else? Also, what devices do you have internal to the computer (most importantly: how many CD-rom drives, how many hard drives, what processor, and what video card).

the issue must be video related because it seems to happen most often when videos are playing. but it also happens when a lot of programs are open. im thinking its a ram issue. i dont know the specs

right click on My Computer, hit Properties, and right there it should tell you the processor type, processor speed, and how much ram you have.

it could be video related, but not necessarily.
