Ok im not sure where this would go, but quick question.

Has anyone ever heard of a turbo that just stops spooling while driving on the highway. In my Dad's VW Golf TDI the turbo sometimes seems to just stop functioning while driving on the highway, at normal highway speeds. After the car is turned off and restarted everything seems to function as normal.

I figured i'd ask on here, if it is in the wrong place srry.

Uh....it just sounds like its not under enough load to spool if your just cruising....but I'm not sure. Better highway gas milage? lol

Not really, because the car has no power then, going up hills on the NE extension is like crawling at 50mph with the pedal to the floor.

Uh...

That shouldn't happen. If there was a boost leak you would feel it all the time and last I know of, the ECU doesn't control the turbo to the point where it can turn it off.

I am not going to say anymore because I dont know **** about diesels

My saab can turn off the turbo if it wants too, really annoying actually.

What were you doing before the turbo cut out? Any hard acceleration, something that might cause heat soak or maybe just a bad batch of fuel.

This needs to be fixed, going 50 on the NE extension will get you killed.

Im not thinking its something with the engine, i put it in this section because i know a bunch of u have turbos(many aftermarket) and may have some advice. We asked a mechanic the one time and he said he couldnt find anything wrong with it, so he drove it and couldnt get it to happen. It's almost like it gets to the point where it releases pressure from the and then gets stuck. We have pulled over many times and if we rev the engine, u cant even the hear the turbo.

The acceleration usually isnt all that hard, because he doesnt drive hard. Maybe from like 70 to 75 to pass. It has happened numberous times, so im not thinkin its the fuel unless we are having good luck getting bad batches.

And trust me pulling over to restart the car on the NE extension is more dangerous than doing 50, because getting back on is killer. Im a huge fan of the Hickory Run Service Plaza.

errr... im not 100% sure if i understand that(please forgive me im a noob, im still learning) but since i dont hear the bov then im assuming its internal.

it could be that the wastegate is not working, or you're having ignition issues possibly

BOV and wastegate act independently. Google blow off valve/recirc valve etc and wastegate - that will get you up to speed quickly. They all mean the same thing

If you are running something like an external wastegate a pin could be stuck and simply hold the wastegate open so you won't build boost.

No ignition system on a diesel.

I'd vaccum test your wastegate and bypass valve.

I have had that happen before--- Driving, then hitting limp mode (painfully slow), then restart it's fine until you're hitting a lot of boost again-- Put a New MAF sensor & never happened again.

The New Revised MAF sensor isn't cheap.

The part number should be: 038 906 461C

Does your car have an electronic wastegate solenoid?

If so, it could be flaking out

The N75 for the TDI's are fine-- except they are slow to prevent big spiking

I'll let my dad know, his car is in horrible shape right now,damn kid that thinks he can race. So if it is expensive he may put it off until a few things are fixed. I think he is also gonna take it to Dennis once he is back from TDIfest.
