what should i swap into my volvo
some of you have probably seen my build thread on my volvo, i was swapping a 4 cylinder turbo engine into the car, but I'm having driveline issues at the moment and although there are solutions available some are costly and simple while others are cheap and complex, not to mention the standalone to run the engine is very very expensive. i was going to sell the car, but not even after a week filled of 250$ offers and insults i have decided to finish what i started, but id like to go another route so what engine belongs in this beast? only limitations are, available cheaply, and simple factory wiring harness if fuel injection, or carbureted. the engine bay is fairly large. keep in mind that this car is a full frame vehicle, so cutting of the body is not that big of a deal. biggest engine I've seen in one was a 302 ford engine pics of the cross member as requested ![]() ![]() the black marks where the suspension arms come out Last edited by rocknrace03; 04-01-2012 at 09:39 AM. |

Glad because your on a roll right now. Any EFI RWD swap would be easy to put in this, if you can fab mounts and do some basic wiring. You need to show good photos of the crossmember and then look at motors available. However a beams 3S-GE or SR20DET are some of the cheaper ways to go. The Beams is a high compression NA motor but pretty bad ass.

fabrication is not an issue, as thats the field ill be entering this summer, beams engine looks sick, but whats the availability? i was hoping for something i could pull at a junk yard, but i wouldn't be opposed picking up an engine trans combo if it was the right price and had a simple harness that basically needed power and ground hooked up. major problem with the volvo engine is that the factory engine harness is tied in to the entire harness, making it almost impossible to pull apart

Oh it's not going to be in the junkyard but you can get them fairly cheap. Under 3K, and they are newer with ITB's, 11.5:1 Compression, easy to wire up, variable timing. So your more likely to get a good healty motor.
Plus junk yard motors.... theres a reason it there. |

Can't go wrong with a 7M-GTE.

I'd go with the 302. There are a ton out there and can be had for dirt cheap. You could buy an entire Mustang 5.0 parts car for $2k or less.

I'm thinking 302 as well, i actually almost had a 96 mustang with the 4.6 to take everything from, but the deal fell through, and I'm kind of glad actually,id really try to get away from efi, with the 302 I'm just worried about the front end being too heavy, id still like to be able to actually drive my car instead of just driving it. I've been looking into a v6 engine, but its hard to find information about the carb'd v6's anyone have any info?

Your only really gonna find carb'd straight six's link out of a 70's nova. Or look into the SHO motor you can get them for $300 and they are bullet proof once you change the rod bearings, their like 550lbs and put out like 240hp stock, and if you get rid of the factory Y-pipe crush bend thats another 25hp with a proper tune. Teres lots of info putting them in rwd cars too

4.8 or 5.3 Chevy LS-based truck motor. Swap to a stock LS1 intake to clear the hood. Probably will be cheaper than any other option and make more power reliably

If you want a light weight motor so that the car can still handle, its probably not hard to swap in a Ford Zetec. They were popular motors for use in RWD Lotous 7 and Caterham kit cars. They are inexpensive in salvage yards, and their aftermarket is large. There are several RWD Ford and Tremec transmission options. Not as large of an aftermarket as a Honda B series of course, but you can get parts easily to build it up to a 300 HP naturally aspirated motor or a high powered turbo motor. You can also go with carbs or ITB's or a factory fuel injection setup.
