Another Recommend car < $5000 (best mpg)

So with gas prices continuing to go up I'm looking for a 4cyl compact sedan. Been driving manual since I was 17 so I finally want an automatic.

Previous Cars
2004 Mazda3 Hatch 5spd (never should have sold it. reliable and great mpg)
2003.5 E46 M3 6 spd (loved the car but it was a weekend car)

Current Cars
1999 Nissan Sentra 5spd (great on gas close to 40mpg highway. car is solid but it's ugly and beat)
2005 Legacy GT 5spd (bought this for awd factor but the premium gas is killing me. the car drinks gas. gets around 20mpg city and 26 highway)

Criteria
-automatic
-4 doors
-4cyl
-atleast 30mpg rating
-price of <$5000

Ford Focus. Very inexpensive, good gas mileage, and low insurance cost.

If you could manage 3 or 5 doors, how about a Suzuki Swift? You'll get some serious gas mileage out of those.

They are pretty much the same car. Dodge Colt can also be squeezed into that category.

Metros are going to be hit or miss really. They can be overpriced for the mileage. Anytime gas goes up to near $4 a gallon, people jack up the prices and expect to get top dollar for even a ratty one. I had a 95 3 cylinder 5 speed and they start to rattle/shake/vibrate at anything over 65 on the highway. It is a little harder to find but there are 95+ models equipped with the 1.3 16valve 4 cylinder that have more power than the 3 cylinders and will be better on the highway.

Came to say this or a Swift. But with a Swift if you find a GT or GTI you can get the peppier DOHC engine and have a quick little daily driver that should still get 40+ mpg. I would love to find one of them honestly. They're so simplistic, yet sorta quick at the same time, its nuts.

Tdi vw's are expensive and to get an auto would be very unwise especially since in your price range the car would have over 150k on it.

I always wanted a Swift but could never find one.

You could always look for a CRX.
