Honda Transmission Question

Hey everybody, so I have a question about the transmission in my 1989 Accord. Every gear works great, no grinds or weird feelings..except 5th. When I go to put it in 5th, its like the gear is missing. It just revs like its in neutral and no gear. So I have just been keeping it in 4th on the highway. Does this mean the gear is completely stripped out or something?

Also, what transmissions will fit in this car? Where (besides junkyards) can I find one for sale?

Thanks

Yeah you have no more 5th. I'm not sure what else will fit in there I've never owned an accord.

My ex had no 3rd in one of his cars and my last trans had to be pulled because it had no 4th or 5th.
Gears do go.

It literally feels like its being put in neutral. Like somebody played a prank and took the gear out completely, lol.

I figured as much, car has over 300k so nothing is surprising. Know where I can possibly find one? So far nothing in junkyards or on ebay. I'm guessing only one that has came from this generation accord will work in it.

I've only researched these cars a little tiny bit, but it seems like nobody does engine swaps in them. I don't know why to be honest.

I just did a junkyard search in PA/NJ/NY and its hard to believe but every place wants more than the entire car is worth for a junkyard trans.

Crescent is very cheap. I'm sure you could get one for $100 if not less.

Where is that? I tried doing a google search to find out some more info but came up empty. I did normal junkyard search online and all I see are ones that are 100+ miles away and for $300+.

There is probably a bent shift fork in the trans, or like bowties said possibly your shift linkage.

For an entire gear to strip the teeth off you'd have a lot of metal floating around in your trans and you'd be having more issues than just missing 5th.

Id say get a shovel and some tools and head to harrys-u-pull-it

If you can get it in position without grinding it could be a shift fork, or something with the linkage. If it grinds getting in there and you cant get it in I would say syncro/fork.

Is there a way to know if they have it before going? I did an online search around the area and it didn't turn up as any being there.

It goes into position smooth, but it just revs instead of catching a gear. Doesn't grind at all.

Id call them, they should have an inventory of their lot. Their website is www.wegotused.com

I live right by the pennsburg location and they seem to have accords there all the time. I could possibly come lend a hand if I'm free when you decide to go.

Brian nailed it, probably a bent/snapped shift fork in the trans, or maybe even a broken synchro. The actual failure of the gear is extremely unlikely. Unfortunately, transmissions are not all that simple to put together and take apart, however if you find yourself a transmission I'd take it apart and see what you find. Unfortunately I don't think you can just swap forks in these transmissions because if I remember correctly they are designed to wear to the synchro collars.

Ariell... I hate to call you out on this one, but I am making quadruple the power you are and have never straight shredded a gear on the weakest Honda transmission out there. You didn't take the trans apart to see what actually broke did you? Sounds like broken shift forks to me, they snap all the time if you're ham fisting it into gear. No need to drive the shifter through the center console, it works just as fast if you just flick it back and forth.
