heres a good starters list
THESE ARE THE PARTS YOU WILL WANT, AND THE RELATIVE ORDER IN WHICH TO GET THEM, AND WHY OF WHICH MOST OF US WHO HAVE BEEN DRIFTING FOR 5-6 YEARS AGREE ON. TO LEARN FASTER AND EASIER, AS WELL AS HAVE MORE CONTROL AND FEEL FROM YOUR CAR FOR DRIFTING, YOU SHOULD BE DOING THIS STUFF:

1) COILOVERS AND DIFF (2WAY OR WELDED, NO VLSD) - you should really do this at the same time, so the order of these two doesn't really matter. without a good diff, you are only spinning one wheel. this makes the car A) unpredictable and B) much hard to make step out into a slide and maintain the slide. so get a good diff... Kaaz, ATS, Tomei, OS Giken, Nismo (not the street one), etc... or have a shop weld it good and deal with the bad parking. VLSD's are junk, after 1 run they get too hot and start slipping, effectively becoming an open diff and useless. coilovers, you know what you need coilovers or give up your car and stop driving.

2) TIE RODS - getting tie rods or specifically spacers for them allows you to have more angle. not only does this mean you get more sideways on huge entries, but for drifting in general, it allows you a safety zone. many times if you are on the gas too hard or transition too fast, your angle cannot match the momentum and you spin. with more angle tho, it allows you many times save yourself from a spin by pushing out that extra angle and maintaining the drift. plus these are cheap, relatively to other stuff. Tein, JIC, Kazama, SPL, etc...

3) A GOOD ASS CLUTCH - clutch kicking is one of the main entry techniques you can use for fast entries. if your clutch slips all the time or cant handle abuse, you will lose an important technique. you can also use the clutch to help in transitions, and/or keep revs up by feathering with the gas when in a real tite turn but you don't want to drop to first gear. clutch work is also useful if you start to straighten out a tad in a drift or understeer, you can often use this with jerks of the steering wheel to kick yourself back out. for underpowered cars, clutch kicking while in mid drift will help you to maintain and prolong the drift where without it your car would die off and lose momentum, effectively making you lose the drift. important!

4) A GOOD SEAT AND STEERING WHEEL - you will notice as you get better with drifting that your knees have huge bruises on them from bracing on the doors. also you'll notice that you slide around in your seat and it sucks. with your hands, you may notice that you hit your hands on the wipers and/or door and/or your legs, once you start working the wheel. get a fixed back racing bucket, and a good wheel with some kind of hub spacer or dish to it. by staying planted in your seat, you not only avoid sliding and bruises, but you are also better able to feel the momentum of the car as it slides or transitions. without a seat, it is harder to feel the slight movements of the car while sliding, making you react slow or over react to a situation. spacing the wheel closer to you, not only provides better arm position, but keeps you from getting hands and arms caught on stuff.

5) DECENT BRAKES AND/OR BRAKE PADS AND LINES - make sure your brakes can physically lock the rear wheels when using the ebrake, and maybe even lock the front brakes when you foot brake. the ability to extend a drift with the brakes, or scrub off speed while maintaining angle and drift is important, especially on big entries, and 3rd to 2nd gear entries. as well as the tight turn as evident in the course we used at the clinic and many wednesday's.

you also need a sa2005 helmet. If you trying to tandem obviously the rules are much more strict

You will still pass tech with a J30 VLSD, it'll just be difficult for you to move up in class. The list that Brad posted was a recommendation for beginners, but not necessarily the rules.

If your car passes tech you can drive.

Though, if you have the chance, I would either get your VLSD shimmed or get a welded before you go out. It'll be easier that way.

Anybody that even wants to try out drifting should come to this.....basically if your car isn't a pile of ****, it will pass tech for C group. The rest of the gear is needed to move up to A or B.

Regardless, there should be a huge turnout for this event at this price.....don't miss out!!!

i wouldn't mind making it out to one of these events after I get everything back together, But like I mentioned to Reese. It's gonna feel weird doing something on a track vs the street. cause I keep things straight grass root style.

Thanks for posting this Brad.

And thefro, thanks for posting the link to the rules.

Also, vlsd's are worthless, shimmed or not. It will pass for C group, but you're going to need a real diff or welded for B group. Especially if it's hot out, a vlsd might last for a run or two, but then it will start acting up worse than an open diff. It's only going to hold you back.

Also 2, Janky, I've done this for certain people in the past, the megaphone I use has what sounds like a police siren, I would sound that off right before his run, it made him feel like he was on the street, and then eventually we started doing less siren and they started realizing they were having more fun and they weren't risking their license and fines to do it.

Also 3, Nick, you don't pass tech. Deal with it.

Also 4, hope to see a ton of dudes out to this one. This is our driver stimulation plan. I know there's tons of you guys that have cars that could drift pretty awesome and really should take advantage of us offering this sweet price and come out and see how much fun it is.

how about we make it more epic fun and someone brings out an old cops car. lol. lights sirens and all. of course video tape the whole thing.
