i borrowed my neighbor's C6 Z06 on friday. He gave it to me for the drive because soon, I will be buying one and I wanted to see how they are driving all day, power, handling ect ect. I got it around 9am. went home and picked up the g/f. got on RT30. was driving down that for maybe 2-3 miles. was cruising at 70.. then all the sudden we hear this weird banging noise and before I knew it.. I see this huge peice of metal FLYING in the air behind me. I quickly pull over and look at the car and find the skin of the roof is GONE!!!!!!!!! I started freaking out bigtime. I ran 1/2 mile back and picked up the metal, put it in the trunk and babied it off the highway. pulled into a parking lot and checked the car for damage. somehow. no-body ran over the peice and it didnt hit anyone or anything. It landed way in the grass off the road and there was no damage to the car THANK GOD!!! I called my neighbor and explained everything (expected him to start freaking out but thank god he was cool) and he had me take it directly the the GM dealership by us. He called ahead of me getting there and talked the service manager what happened. Then he called me back and told me that it was not my fault and there is a recall on the glue. what a feakin day!!! I couldn't believe all what happened. thank the lord that nobody got injured/killed from the flying metal in the air.

Shouldnt they have contacted your neighbor, or any other z06 owner about the roof glue?

when i got to the dealership.. they said that that recall was performed on it and it was the first Z06 ever to actually have this happen.... so I doubt they actualy did the recall and got paid for doing nothing.

Yeah, for real... glue, though? A letter, e-mail, phone call, something should have been made to inform all Z06 owners of a recall. Luckily no one was injured, but if anything had happened with public recall like that, Chevrolet would be having some problems.

Actually, there are alot of cars today that are held together with glue, and not spot welds.
Its kind of amazing, when you put 5 spot welds on a 5"LX1"w seam, and do the same exact seam with glue, the spot welds will rip apart at a lower pressure than the glue joint, which will tear the metal before the glue breaks. Only problem is that just about any adhesive deteriorates with age, so i wonder how well it will fare in 40 years.

Enigma is right, some cars(audi) even have their quarter panels glued on now. Also, with the z06 being a mostly fiberglass body, what is the material surrounding the roof(a/b/c pillar skin) made of?

They should've used Guerilla Glue. That stuff will hold ANYTHING.

haha, GM loves losing their tops. 4th gen f bodies have problems with the t-tops flying off
well, idk if its really GM's fault or just clumsy owners, but it happens kinda often. even happened to my friend. i think he didnt close it right though. it flew off on the freeway and he had to get a new set lol |
