i'd say not as many cars will even be considered by automakers to be V8 powered, but the V8 will never totally die. Muscle oriented cars will always have to have a V8 option of some sort. Example is the twin turbo V6 Ford is trying to replace the mustang V8 with down the road. if Ford doesn't offer any V8 option along side it, they are shooting themselves in the foot.

it's dwindling from the mainstream but it's not dying, there will always be v8s produced as long as there are internal combustion engines produced.

the question isnt "is it going to die out all together?" of course its not...but is it going to be over looked for turbo v6's and other more practical motors, yes.

More like turbo 4 cylinders.
I wouldn't say dieing, but we are saving fuel a lot more these days due to cost. So its supply and demands basics. But when you look at it.
Toyota trucks/suv and Lexus use V8's
Infinity truck/suvs/M Series use V8's, Nissan trucks/SUVs
Hyundai makes a V8
VW makes a V8
GM has a ton of FWD/RWD V8 cars, Trucks and SUV
Ford F150 only comes V8, plus the SUV's, and Luxary lines use the modular motors.
And Mopar, they stick that 5.7 in damn near anything they can.
And many more
Dying no, in the last 5 years V8s have made a come back in the US market. Just not in the entry level classes. When you think about it its the V6 that's dying. Inline 4's have just been getting better and better eliminating the reason to have the somewhat peppier V6 option.

No, I was right...more like turbo v6's and yes other turbo 4s.
its not about being peppy or power, or what a few select people would rather have becuase they love v8s, its about gas mileage federal laws that v8's just cant keep up with.

It is for normal cars. but for specialty cars like the vette, and high performing stangs and camaros it isnt. But cars like the charger RT are soon to be obsolete
Exhibit A: Ford SHO.......V6 TT........365bhp

There will always be v8's out there. Whether they are used as commonly in production cars or not is the question. With direct injection turbo charged engines out there the need for a v8 will be less then ever before, but muscle cars will always be some sort of v8 option cars. I'm sure we will see not only a string of direct injected v8's with better fuel economy as well as some sort of ecoboosted v8. I wouldn't mind a twin turbo v6 in my next mustang, but I'm sure for the cobra or Gt500 reincarnation twin turbo v8 or something in the v8 family will be used. Just like the corvette, challenger, camaro, and a number or trucks and suv's will have some kind of v8 power as atleast an option.

Dude, the thought of a direct injected twin turbo V8 Shelby Mustang made me commit quite a genocide in my pants. :) I wish I were joking

it is becoming more rare... I don't see it ever dying all together though... People are just looking for more efficient way's to have power. turbo's and supercharger's on smaller motors are becoming more popular because if it is driven efficiently it won't use as much gas as a v8 making SIMILAR power....

BMW has V8's in their 5-series and 3-series(M3). They now will have a twin turbo V8 in the new 7-series.

just an FYI, not sure if its mentioned in this thread either, but ford will be offering both a TTV6 and a V8 for the GT 2011 model. I believe they'll be priced about the same as well

with sites that are all about putting v8's into other cars they will never die! might go up in price but the will never die, in less cars sure but never go away! like now i am planning on getting an ls1 for my rx7 might even sell my fc to get an fd to many people have toys and always need v8's for them :D

Seems like the author didn't get it right starting off, in the first paragraph!
The V8 engine, a symbol of power and prestige for more than a century, is looking more and more like an endangered species.
He must've been asleep in the 90's, that's when V8's plunged. Fast forward to 2000 and up, Nissan and Toyota have full size V8 pickups, like someone mentioned, dodge put a their new V8 in almost everything they could. Mercedes loves their 5.4L sohc and put that in almost everything. A slew of exotics use V8's now.
The only real change now is that there are more V8's getting turbos and s/c put on by the factory.

V8's and other large displacement/cylinder blocks are bound to stay around in the American/European markets. After all...the image of the old Muscle Car isn't going to fade any time soon, and the apex of the current Muscle Car image is to get something with a big ol' V8 under the hood. Companies like Mercedes aren't exactly known for being the most "efficient" types, they'll keep making guzzlers for a while. The thing about the new M3 having a V8 is that the M Division has (until the new M X5 and M X6) never had anything besides a naturally-aspirated motor...sort of their idea of a tradition.
It's a shame - I've always wanted to get some sort of a project car with a big motor and dirt-simple engineering under the hood. But any sort of practicality is going out the door very quickly.

yeah maybe after the 1st or 2nd race...than they fall apart.
the V8 will never die period. if the worlds sole purpose in the auto industry is to make fuel efficient vehicles than why not put Diesel engines in everything?!?!?. they get the best gas mileage by far between the 2 and rival the hybrids. they can make power just as well, if not easier, than a gas engine.
honestly...dont you guys think they have the technology to make an engine that gets 30+mpg and still make decent power?? sure they do....but why would you do that....that means the gas companies would lose money.

chevy had carburetor technology that allowed them to get high mpg and high hp out of v8's. they bought the patent and to this and threw it away. they don't want you to have a cheap effective way to run your car. look at the ****ing smart cars and honda fits. they're a ****ing joke. they brag about 35 mpg like it means something and you have to spend 12-15 for the car. you could easiily get a 1800 dollar mid 90's civic and get a consistent 42 mpg.....
