View Full Version : What wideband do you use?

I'm in the market for a wideband.
What setup do you use and what sensor does it use (bosch/ntk/etc)? Also, how long do you have to go before replacing the sensor? And if possible, how did it compare to your tuners high end unit (motec/aem)? I'm new to widebands for the most part so its kinda overwhelming me at the moment.
The 3 im considering so far is: FJO, Innovate LC1, PLX m300. I'm looking for something that is accurate/best bang for the buck, and be able to handle occasional street driving.
Any input from personal experience would be awesome!

I've used the AEM with great success, Never tried the 3 your considering.

I've heard the AEM's fail quite often. But then some people swear by them.

I used an Zeitronix unit in my MR2 without any issues. Keep in mind the sensor was at the end of the downpipe. < 3 feet from the turbo lol. The car Im getting this weekend has a PLX unit and the previous owner has raved about it ever since I started talking to him. Unfortunately no personal experience with it but I hear nothing but good things about them

I use the Innovate LC1 an my tuner loves it. It's worked great since I've bought it 1 years ago *knock on wood* an the cars I've seen my tuner work with all seem to have it too.

I run two widebands in my Nissan. One goes straight to the ecu, the other to a gauge. Both are AEM, both always read the same. been good for three years.

I do like the lc-1 myself, but I've heard mixed reviews about the bosch sensor it uses. I also like the price of it.

Seem fine to me I'm sure if there was any serious issues we would have found out quickly hitting it with the shot.

I have an AEM Uego in my Z and have had good luck with it. The sensors fail as often as any others, but are easy to replace. They go much quicker if you run leaded race gas.

Most issues are because of improper placement. They work fine.

I had the AEM in my SRT4 and it worked well. I now have an LC-1 in the evo and works very well, the recalibration is a little weird but effective. The LC-1 is wired right into the computer and works very good.

PLX M300 here, no longer made I don't think. Best wideband I've ever seen or used, and I've used most of them.
I hate the AEM. It's ugly and has been known to vary up to a point off.
I really don't like the LC-1. I had one and I did not like it at all, too much of a pain to get a gauge set up to it and get it to datalog correctly.
I'm partial to the PLX stuff, but I like the Zeitronix stuff too.

FJO wideband with NTK sensor
Mostly using 93 pump but over the years probably added up to 150 gallons of leaded racegas and even with that the NTK lasts a few years. Actually when I replaced it with a new one it was still OK just getting a bit sluggish. It usually agrees closely with the dyno wideband taking into account they're quite a few feet apart.

Dan, that's exactly how I want mine to look. What is the car tuned with and is it sending a narrow band signal to the management?

I won't ever use the AEM one since it's been known to have issues when used with ECMLink (DSM tuning software). I've not heard of many issues with it on other cars though. Either way I'll always stick with the Innovate LC-1.

Hondata s300. I'll have to double check on the narrowband signal

In my experience I actually got better gas mileage if I took the time to just tune it and keep it in open loop than letting it go closed. Also drove better and I could get more throttle response out of it, if you can call it that when the turbo spools so late lol.
Honduh
02-21-2011, 02:16 PM
That's why I was asking. Evans says he always eliminates the o2 and runs open loop. But I saw a lot of threads on h-t about people wiring them in. Think I'm going to same route as you.

Im using the AEM UEGO, had it for about 2 years now and no problems. it comes with a bosch sensor, and im still on my first one. works great. only thing ive noticed was that it reads a half point to the rich side, but that dosnt bother me any as its easy math. its good for any street driven car. and im tuned on safc2, so its nothing crazy that would require a higer end wideband like innovate or the other ones like it.
brain what are you tuning your car on?
SovXietday
02-21-2011, 03:03 PM
It's also worth mentioning that just like anything else electronic in a car, the quality of the install has the ability to make a difference in the accuracy of the readings. ALWAYS make sure you have a good ground when installing a wideband, if you have a poor ground the readings will be off. This goes with any 5V sensor, as poor grounds will cause "leaks" in the system and you'll have voltages left over giving you off readings.

The car will be tuned on s300 by Evans.

My car was tuned by Jeff Evans after the build. So he'll probably tune your car similar to mine in the end.

Yes I'm sure he will. Jeff has seen so many honda's he basically can see a setup and know exactly how to set it.

You got it. Don't know what's to be torn about. Tunerview displays everything you could possibly want to see straight from the ECU in a realtime digital display. :)
I hate gauges, all of the wires you have to run through the engine bay. USB -> Hondata box -> screen = 50 extremely accurate gauges all in one small LCD screen.

I been running the LC1 for over 2 years now, daily driven every day. I have put almost 20,000 miles on it. Its been great. Finkiy at first, make sure both grounds and your ecu are gorunded to the same point and you should be good.

I'm mainly torn because I've never seen the set up in person. Also, what sending units do you use, or does it come with them? Is there any chance I could come peep your setup this week or next maybe? I could also bring you that scrap metal at the same time.
On a more on topic note, I just picked up a PLX M300te Wideband from MAperformance.
Used an AEM UEGO on my MSP for three years and never had any problems. It's still sitting on a shelf in the garage, waiting to be installed in my next toy .. whenever I can afford one.

If you run your car on strictly pump gas any of the bosch sensor widebands will work fine (AEM, Autometer, ect), but if you use leaded fuel then you will want something with a NTK sensor. I personally use FJO on my car and have had zero issues.

How does $160 sound?
http://www.hrtuning.com/pages/category/tunerview2-lgdash
If you're running Hondata S300 you just need to also get the Hondata module, which is $35 extra.
PS, what's with you and buying wiring nightmares, LOL! Let me know what you want to do about it.

Certainly welcome to come over and check it out if you want. There are no sending units or anything else needed (unless you wanted to do like oil pressure, in which case you'd need to buy a 5V oil pressure sensor), it basically relays the ECU info. The only thing you'll need is that Hondata box like I mentioned above, which basically just allows streaming from Hondata. The only real downside is that with Hondata you can't datalog, but I don't really know why you'd want to considering Hondata's datalogging is quite good and easy to use.
Seriously it's a really nice piece and the price is great too. Easy to install, small enough to fit places, and with being able to do both realtime data AND peak data, with the push of a button you can scroll back and forth between screens and it's all right there. How many boost gauges do you own that stick at their highest points while relaying the current boost pressure.
PS: Nice wideband! I didn't know PLX came out with an M300 successor. Looks great, you'll be happy with it. Just going to need to get used to how fast it displays haha it's very quick.
