Infiniti G25 & G37 IPL Coupe

The G25 Sedan

http://www.infinitiusa.com/g_sedan/

http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/2011-infiniti-g25.html

A budget G series sedan, perhaps to go coupe? I sure hope not. But I guess infiniti had to make something a little more affordable. 110hp less then the G37 at 328. The G25 is a 2.5 liter VQ.... The VQ25 has been around for a while in Japan, and they decided to use it here.

Base price is about 30K, where a base G37 is 35.5K... Entry level at 30K

The G37 IPL (Infiniti Performance Line)

Pretty cool upgrade to the G37, but it could have been executed better. Lack of Brembo, and for a performance line I think they could have gotten more then 18HP out of the VQ37. Nice price tag on this, just cant see why.

348 Horsepower IPL G37 Coupe

Announced on August 12, 2010, Infiniti will be releasing a new performance initiative that is simply named "Infiniti Performance Line", or IPL for short. IPL will be similar to Nissan's NISMO initiative where manufactured-warrantied parts, as installed by dealerships, will be offered to the public along with low-production speciaty vehicles. This is not a new concept to Nissan as they have been releasing specialty vehicles in Japan for quite a number of years and have been offering NISMO-tuned offerings for the Nissan Z-series lineup as well. From an Infiniti perspective, the rumors have been true and it's now officially announced. Per Infiniti Vice President Ben Poore:

“IPL was conceived to create a new premium performance envelope, going beyond equipment upgrades to accelerate the very soul of Infiniti’s Inspired Performance, IPL brings all the elements together, styling harmonized with performance, exhaust note with acceleration feel, ride comfort and confident handling. It’s the perfect formula for unmatched driving exhilaration.”

With the announcement of the IPL offering, and a debut of the vehicle at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Infiniti will be offering a new tuned-performance G37 coupe starting in 2011.

2011 Infiniti G37 IPL Coupe Specification Overview

* IPL-tuned 3.7-liter DOHC 24-valve VQ37VHR V6
* 348 horsepower @ 7,400 rpm
* 276 lb-ft torque @ 5,200 rpm
* IPL-tuned high-flow dual exhaust
* IPL-tuned performance suspension with independent front double wishbone / independent rear multi-link, front and rear stabilizer bars
* 19-inch IPL split 7-spoke graphite-finish wheels (19x8.5” front / 19x9” rear)
* P225/45R19 front / P245/40R19 rear W-rated Bridgestone Potenza RE50A summer tires
* 14.7:1 sport-tuned steering gear
* IPL aerodynamics with front and rear fascias, side sills and rear spoiler
* Unique IPL emblem
* IPL engine cover
* Red-stitched sport front seats and steering wheel
* Aluminum pedals and footrest
* Interior colors: Monaco Red Leather and Graphite Leather

The 2011 IPL G37 receives custom interior and exterior colors, changes to the spoilers, bumpers and side sills, custom split-7 rims, and spring rates are increased 20% front and 10% rear. Performance changes consist of engine management changes which increase maximum peak hp to 7400rpm vs 7000rpm, and peak torque was tuned for linearity. In addition, Infiniti changed the coupe exhaust layout to a ture-dual configuration utilizing a new y-pipe configuration which results in 30% less back pressure. Engine ECU changes with exhaust result in the final 348hp/267tq offering in 2011 which is +18hp/+6tq over the current G37 coupe.

Well net 348hp from a 3.7 with good fuel economy, what more tricks do you need. It's robust, proven, makes big power for a small motor. It's amazing what you can do with these with heads, cams, intake /ITB's and a good tune.

He is correct in saying the VQ is old hat. It is 16 years old. I believe that the peak has been reached currently with the GTR. If Nissan follows the same path with the VQ as the VG, its time is limited. The VG had a 23 year run. The VQ is in its 16th year currently. There is not much room left for improvement. Maybe a 3.8 with direct injection...IDK, but its days are numbered.

Although I agree, you have to remember many car manufacturers follow the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality. Look at Chevy. They've been running slightly modified versions of the SB 350 for decades. Honda does the same thing. Both the B and D series engines have been put into cars for at least 15+ years.

And especially now in a "recession" economy, car compaines will continue to slightly modify their current engines and continue to sell them. Its super cost effective. I couldn't imaging the amount of money, time, and R&D goes into designing a new engine/power-train. And thats money car companies aren't making these days.

And as for new engines, I could see it being smarter and more cost effective to introduce said engine in a new model or a completely redesigned model year.

I like the VQ engine. It's lasted years and has been proven to be powerful, reliable, and relatively efficient in stock forms in various vehicles. It is one of the greater engines to come out of the far east.

I saw a bunch of Skyline 250GTs when I was over in JDM land. I think it's a smart move bringing them over.

I dont think that the G25 is necessary at all. 5k is not too much of a difference, especially when financing over a few years, so anyone in their right mind will still buy the G37. Problem is, i bet it actually will wind up selling like hot cakes cuz all the vein people out there with the money (which seems to be a lot) will save their 5k and buy the G25 cuz they still get the same "image". Its a sort of "if u build it they will come" type of thing. Its actually similar to the current iPod classic, 120G for 250 bucks....great value and thats why that is the only classic theyre making now. However, if they made an 80G for like 180-200 bucks then im sure theyd sell plenty just cuz its there (although 95% of ppl buying the 80G wouldve bought the 120G had there been no 80G). Same type of situation as the G series.

As for the IPL, i call it a let down. 400bhp was a must to make it worth spending any more money, the basic G37 is such a good car to begin with.
