That depends... crude oil prices went down on the market Friday due to Gustav not gathering as much strength as anticipated. It's a bull**** game they are playing and they are beginning to get called for it. My guess is we see a <10% hike and then have it settle back on a downward trend.

If it really hits $5 a gallon, I think I'm going to invest in a motorcycle and get rid of all my cars. I'll use public transportation or something when it rains/snows. I'd understand if there was a need to raise prices due to a shortage or something, but every quarter oil companies report record profits. That means that they've made more money than they ever had before every damn financial quarter. It's ridiculous. I remember when the last hurrican made fuel priced jump up overnight to around what they are now two or three years ago. It cost me almost $80 to fill up my VR-4 at the time, and that was unheard of. They're gonna have to raise that damned minimum wage to $10 an hour soon.

Not going to skyrocket. They shut down offshore platforms and futures still went down.

Crude oil sunk again today. They are calling it to hit $100 a barrel in the near future. From a gas pricing perspective, the last time it was this "cheap" we were in the high-$2s low-$3s per gallon at the pump if I recall correctly.

Talk for a little while was it crashing to something insane, like $30-40 a barrel, which would KILL the global economy (not literally, but it wouldn't be pretty). I just hope it settles in around maybe $80-100, keep gas prices somewhere in the mid $2-low $3/gallon range. That, I can afford. Not that $4.18/gallon crap that was in Providence for a while.

You guys seem to be more informed on the subject than I am. What is the liklihood really of it settling in that low?

Friend of mine pays REALLY close attention to the oil markets (he works in the finance industry).

Hitting $40-30 a barrel really is unlikely, but there is a pretty strong chance that $100 a barrel is possible around Jan. (at least, that is what he is telling me, and he is usually pretty close to being right, since this is really all he does).

When I wrote that, I meant the $80-100 mark, not $30-40. So, if it does hit $100 and stay there for a bit, what does that equal @ the pump?

And why by January? That's still quite a ways away.

I am quite shocked. I remember oil companies using Katrina as an excuse for a major price hike. Looks like we were spared.
