Cops being able to search tractor trailer anytime

Hey, one of my friends dad's says that because of the Patriot Act, any cops can pull over his 18wheeler and randomly search it in and out without a warrant. He says this is done going in and out of NYC. My question - I thoughts cops always needed warrant to search something. Keep in mind - he is an owner operator and does not haul any hazardous or of the like material.

Trucks are subject to random search going over bridges and into tunnels. What the guildlines are I have no idea. Since I drive my car on bridges and in tunnel I have no problem with any vehicle or person being searched so I don't get blown up. Why does this bother you?
