Junkyard BBS wheel deal FTW!!!! Three refinished, pics page 2
The wheels are in decent shape. Took me some time to take them off the car with the wheel locks on them. The fronts came off ok, but the rears wouldn't budge. So one of the guys working at the yard moved the car with a loader to the garage and we torched the wheel locks off. You can see the burn marks left from the torch in the pics, but there was no damage to the wheels. These are basically my before pics. I'll update as I refinish them. The wheels are 16x7 5x114.3 and they look to be around a +20 offset. The only problem I have with them right now is that the front calipers rub on the wheels. If I put on a small spacer they don't rub at all. It only rubs on this little nub that is sticking out of caliper. I think if I grind down that nub it should be ok without the spacers. The wheels look to be very close to the fender so I want to avoid spacers. Straight from the junkyard. They need alot of work! And the super model himself sesolcSTI. All center caps. I'm think about sending one out to see if someone can cut me out a piece from aluminum to replace the faded rubber stickers. After a few minutes of cleaning and short section that I decided to strip the old clear from the lip just to see what was underneath.

Now I need to decide how I want to go about cleaning these up. I don't want to spend to much money on these, but I want to start from a good base. What can I do to strip the whole wheel including the inside of the wheels that have years of crap built up?
Someone I know mentioned that he had a engine block "Hot Dipped" before the machining process to clean it up. I guess it just means dipping it in acid. Sand/bead blasting is another option. Whatever I have to do, it has to take the top coat off the wheels and all of the old brake dust in between the spokes. Powder coat or paint the centers?

Don't hot tank them if they are aluminum. Go to a shop and have them media blasted. That should pretty much rid mostly everything. You'll save yourself a ton of time.

Yes they are aluminum, so I guess blasting it is.
I really don't feel like sanding in between the spokes. But I don't mind sanding/repolishing the lips by hand. The price was reasonable, but I don't want to say just in case I want to sell them later down the road.

It will but I want to take the center and backside of the wheel to bare metal to start fresh. The lips I'm just using aircraft stripper for the old clear then sand paper from 220-2000grit to repolish.

try some muriatic acid... can be picked up at home depot... i used it to clean out my old IM's on the mx6... be careful tho because it can start to take away material if left too long... you may be able to prevent it if you cut it with water or something

And these fit the 7 no problem? If so this might have to be the route I take for my 6. I want some BBS mesh wheels for it. The vert wheels are a little hard to come by sometimes.
