3 Lenses to Choose From
I shoot a lot of indoor sports, scenery, possibly looking into event/wedding photography in the future. So, i have 2 similar lenses and one different lens in mind. Canon 70-200 f4L Sigma 70-200 f2.8 (like this for the higher F-stop but have no experience with sigmas and it weighs 5 pounds!) Canon 17-40 f4 ultra wide angle What is recommended? If you guys/girls have any other lens suggestions post 'em up, in addition (please) to your thoughts/experience with the 3 lenses I mentioned. Price limit is $800 (would like to spend $100-$200 less but... yeah) This will also be used with and without a 430ex flash w/ diffuser.

No thanks, I'd like a decent zoom if I go for a L lens. The L lens in my list is lowest on the totem pole based on the f4 rating (i have a f4 75-300 telephoto f4 and i need more light coming in), only reason I'm considering it is it focuses closer than the sigma and is lighter.

I have no personal experience with wedding photography so take this for what it's worth, but I believe you'll definitely want something faster than f/4.0 for shooting inside.

yeah thats what I'm thinking too. However i cant afford the f2.8 canon lens and most lenses in that f-stop area are too pricey.

If you are looking to do indoor events f2.8 is the slowest lens you're going to want to have even with the hot shoe flash. Have you thought of any of the prime lenses like the 50/1.4 or the 85/1.8? If not try looking for a canon 24-70/2.8 used or the 70-200/2.8 used. It may be a little above your budget but they are both well worth it

i have a 50mm 1.8, I'd like to have some variety in my shots like close ups mediums and wide angles etc. i don't want to keep changing lenses. Plus at some newspaper shoots i am at a dance show and have to stand in the back.

I've done the dance show thing a lot and the 70-200/2.8 is great for that. Works great for headshots if you need it and if you are in the back the 70mm part of it can get sort of wide to get more in. Heres a link to all my Dance Pics

I've never used the Sigma so I can't comment on how that is. I don't think you would be disappointed with a Canon L lens

im in the process of saving for a canon 70-200 f2.8 i thought about the same alternatives you did.. but then i realized its $1300 lens for a reason, because its GOOD. just be patient and save.

i would have kept the xsi and purchased the Canon 70-200 2.8L. Good glass is far more important than expensive bodies.

I still have the XSi currently, I'd like to upgrade the body so i can have higher resolution, and a higher iso. I find myself shooting in low light constantly, for example tomorrow i have to shoot another dance company I'm going to shoot in RAW with a few shots this time to see if i can edit them better in PS.
As for the Canon 2.8L, I just can't fathom spending $1,300 on a USED lens then, carrying around that $1,300 Lens at this point in my career. Plus the Sigma has gotten a lot of good reviews on Amazon. thanks Blue_gsx23 for the input!
