1971 VW Bug

My first car is my 1971 VW Super Beetle. This car was given to me by my older brother when I was only 15. It was the car I learned stick on and has been a blast since I was able to first drive.

I don't have pictures of it when I first owned it that are digital, but it started out completely stock. My brother helped with all the body work and welding to replace all the usual stock rust areas. We originally painted it Porsche Red, and after a few years, I decided on Porsche Green.

We even attempted suicide doors, but after a few failed attempts, put the doors back to stock.

The motor has been rebuilt twice now. It started as a crate 2110cc, but we changed out the cylinders to increase to 2180cc.

KYB shocks
Centerline wheels
Front strut brace
Traction bar
T-bar bumpers
De-trimmed
Custom turn signals and teardrop taillights
Billet running boards
Fiberglass dash with Autometer gauges
Aftermarket seats and door panels
Fabric headliner
Scat short throw shifter
Decklid standoffs for increase cooling to motor
Built trans w/ super diff
Chromoly race axels

Engine Specs:
2180cc VW motor, stroked and bored
Autocraft hi lift rockers
Engle 120 cam
P/P high flow heads, 42 x 37.5 valves
Dual 48 IDF Weber Carbs
Merged headers

The car is effectively where I want it to be, however it wasn't running 100% last summer. The jetting on the carbs is off and I haven't had a chance to play around with it.

Also, once I have the money, I want to replace the interior, or at least get recovered as I bought them used from another bug owner. Would also love to build a 2275cc with some dual Weber IDA's and get a Gene Berg 5 speed transmission.

Having seen this thing in person I can say that it is awesome! It's in very great shape. Just needs to get running again.

Yup! You can see the fender in the first pic when it was Guard's Red.

Last summer my brother and I ripped the motor out to replace the cylinders to increase the motor size.











2180cc Idle and Rev Video

Motor has some slight hesitation in this video. The carb linkage wasn't set perfectly and Weber's can be a pain to set on VW's.

This thing is so awesome. I've been wanting to build a big bore Beetle forever! Where did you pick up the larger cylinders and performance parts if you don't mind my asking?

The motor was a long block I bought from Gex (not even sure if they still exist) which had the stroker crank in it. The cylinders and pistons are AA from CIP, the head are CB Performance (lots of performance parts from this place) lifters are Scat which I picked up at a VW meet, Webers you can pick up alot of places, transmission was built from a shop in CA, can't remember it's been so long.

Hot VWs was the mag of choice when looking for places to buy parts, ton of vendors.

I consider my motor a kinda budget build, and I would've went top of line everywhere and pieced all together myself when I build my next one.

I did run a 15.0 at Maple Grove about 5 years ago with it though with the 2110. Nothing special, but in a bug I'll take it!

Tail lights are love or hate, I just hate the stock 71 ones.

I would love to get a 60's bug to create a cal-look one aiming for a 12sec street car. Don't think I'll get this one down that quick...

Very easy to work on. Jack car up, four 17mm nuts, lower motor on jack, 30 minutes tops and the motor is out. And there isn't much going on for a stock motor while it's in the car. If you can get past the whole really slow part, the stock motors are amazing!

It's amazing what you see swapped into these cars.

Back in the day it used to be Corvair motors. There's an awesome set-up with a rotary swap, I think the bug is called the black mamba or something. It's absolutely sick!

Very nice! You do the motor work yourself or do you use anyone? Jw where you would get your block clearanced if you go stroker. I'm outside the Reading area and I think Ulrich machines cases.

I didn't do anything to the engine I bought it new as a 1915cc. Just want to add dual severs and a bolt on turbo maybe
