A couple more Philly events in the books! I killed a set of tires at this one in April. Finished 8th in PAX.

Sunday there was another event, super challenging course and I think I just had a bad plan for the course. Finished 7th in PAX

We made the boring drive up to Pocono early yesterday for NEPA, the event was fantastic and we had a blast just driving and thrashing the car all day. Super fast and fun course, a real challenge.

I pulled off the fastest street tire run by a good amount and was second in PAX behind Jon in his STX FR-S, not bad at all!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRYdh0GySHk

Amy finished up 5th in STR and solidly in the top half of PAX even with her never getting very comfortable with shifting. The pedal placement in the BRZ is definitely not as good as in the RX-8 for shifting under duress. Proud of her for sending it even not being comfortable!

Had a new addition before the event too! Picked up a Perrin intake used from a friend:

Had a fun day with Philly & WDCR at Ripken stadium, pulled off another 2nd place in PAX and a win in STR. My car is working really really well, I ordered an OS Giken diff tuned by Shaftworks USA and I'm not even sure I need it, haha. I'll be installing that soon, but for now, a video of my fastest run. Amusingly, like every other Ripken event, I don't seem to find any time after my first run... Annoying, but glad I'm on pace right away at least haha.

I installed my Shaftworks USA tuned OS Giken Super Lock LSD this past weekend! Install went smoothly and no leaks. Here are some install pics, my feedback so far (very very limited feedback) is below.

Subaru *can* use the correct amount of RTV, wow!

The break in instructions for the diff, which explains the lack of meaningful feedback

Ring gear all torqued on with orange threadlocker in lieu of the stock locking tabs. Marked for future inspection.

Diff backlash checked out perfectly in spec, at the tighter end but NBD. The diff has less whine on decel now, haha.

Waiting for the cover sealant to cure, bored...

Installed a polyurethane shifter bushing, mostly because it was cheap. I've noticed no meaningful difference.

So for some initial feedback... With the caveat that I now have ~15 miles on the diff (of the 1500 street miles for full break in) and I'm using Motorcraft fluid, not the fancy OS Giken fluid.

The diff chatters bad on power in tight corners in my neighborhood but does not when coasting. I assume this is mostly just the oil, my ND Miata was silent and smooth as silk.

Feels awesome when attacking, drifts are super progressive and less snappy. When it's not drifting it just carves the line you picked, like it did on my ND. So you're on a line and you get on the gas and the nose almost wants to tuck itself in to counteract the natural push.

Seems to put power down better too, duh?

Great work on the diff! I have used an extra bottle of LSD additive to quiet down LSD chatter in the past. Helped a good bit in my experience.

Are you using a 140 weight GL5? I recently switched to a 140 from a 90 and the diff seems happier.

This is the stuff I use on top of the LSD rated fluid (that already has the friction modifier in it)

Amusingly...

I was a bit tired of the chattery/binding from the cheap break in fluid... So I swapped to the OSG fluid, haha.

With the Motorcraft fluid, the diff felt like it was sort of sticking. Driving around casually I'd go to turn in and the car sort of fought me until I took my foot off the gas and went to neutral throttle and the diff opened up.

The diff took a bit to work the other fluid out but now it's essentially silent and smooth. Feels really good. Just yeet it around corners and floor it and you get a super smooth progressive slide, like the diff is actively working to push you forward and arrest the slide. I can't wait to see how it does at autocross now!

Excellent to hear! It's incredible what a difference the right fluid can make in the dif. I remember when the fluid in my E46 was going bad and the rear was starting to bind around parking lot turns. It was much stiffer feeling....replaced the fluid with fresh OEM immediately and it all went away and the rear was smooth to drive again.

Should continue to be a monster for you at autocross and will probably have lower dif temps if there is no more noise and it's smoother now.

Yeah, it's amazing how little things make a big difference! Looking forward to getting more usage on the diff.

Did my first autocross yesterday on the new diff. Simmons codrove as well, so lots of runs and good competition! The diff definitely needs more break in usage and some dry runs, but so far the car seems more stable on entry and puts power down better on exit. Less snappy and you can be way more aggressive on power. I'm really curious how it behaves in the dry!

Here's my fastest run, good for 2nd in PAX. I was slower than Simmons in the slalom and a good bit slower into the far turnaround as well, I just braked too early.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfufnsPmPhw

Here's Simmons first (and only ) clean run in my car:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7jfkZaxFmw

Here's his fastest run, with two wobbles of cones that just slid out of their boxes. He was taking it safe in the faster/sketchier places due to the conditions which I appreciate haha:

This weekend was Philadelphia SCCA region's Al Holbert Memorial autocross weekend. I've been the winner of the two day event the last two years, but this year with my class having a harder PAX handicap and having the "wrong car" for my class I knew it would be tough. I was able to just pull off the win last year even with the "wrong car" but competition has been really stiff this year! Lots of really fast drivers in the Philly region and we had drivers visiting from all around!

Day one was great, Amy and I were getting used to the new OS Giken diff, more on that later. Amy was super happy with the car and I felt like it was easier too. We did pretty darn well, I won STR and was sitting fourth for the Holbert trophy. Amy was really competitive in STR as well!

Amy's fastest run:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHuyD5sYTwk

My fastest run:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S82bdji8PQI

I went a little faster on my 5th run when I really learned the diff, but I tagged a stupid cone in the process.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A27i3EJjW4

Amy was very happy on day 1!

Day two was even more fun, but other folks got faster! I ended up finishing fourth for the Holbert, less than a half second back over two days. Not at all unhappy considering the limitations of my car in STR. Amy had a weird issue on one run, the car popped out of first gear for no apparent reason about 25 feet off the line.

Amy's fastest on day 2:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4us-fQVY7Q

My fastest run on day 2:

For feedback on the differential, Jon at Shaftworks USA *killed it* on the diff! It's a pretty decent difference in driving style, but it's really rewarding and fun to get it right... and more importantly I think it's made the car faster. The car is more stable on entry and really really forgiving of chucking the car around. When you're mid corner in a sweeper and you feel like the front end isn't going to hold on anymore, you can start to roll on the gas and it just tucks the nose wherever you have the steering wheel pointed. SOOOO nice to be able to get on the gas earlier and power out of the corner sooner. On top of the behavior change, the new differential puts down power over bumps so much better than the stock Torsen limited slip, it just accelerates forwards all the time instead of chattering and hopping.

Installed the SYMS Racing Team oil pan, install went smoothly and I didn't really have any RTV in the pickup after cleaning it out a year ago or so.

Their instructions were pretty good, once translated to English:

Philly event number 9 yesterday! I finished 3rd in PAX but coned away 7 tenths of a second or so. Amy also did great, finishing 3rd of 7 in STR!

The car was *money* and perfect out of the gate, I love the new diff. Made some minor setup tweaks after the last event and they were GREAT today. The diff has come alive, making the car easier to drive and way more confidence inspiring.

Finished up printing my hood vent design in Nylon 12 CF, came out great! I need to bond the three pieces together and cut a hole in my hood now, haha.

Chief inspector, Shelby, approved.

Did my (probably) last event in STR yesterday, got oh so close to taking down Ken Roller (2023 D Street National Champion) for overall PAX. Five thousandths behind him with possibly the best autocross run I've ever driven. Maximum attack and FULL send.

Installed the STI wing this evening and I love it! Subaru's execution of aftermarket parts is exceptional, I wish every aftermarket parts manufacturer was nearly as good. Subaru provided vacuum molded drilling templates for the inside of the trunk, a huge paper template for the top of the trunk, then all of the reinforcement brackets to stiffen the trunk lid so it can handle the downforce safely, I'm really impressed!

Over the winter I had designed a replica of the GR Cup hood vent and slowly worked on making it a reality (mostly sitting around not doing anything about it after moving, if I'm honest)

I finally got around to setting up my oldest 3D printer, an Ender 3 Pro, to handle Nylon 12 CF and printed the hood vent. I wasted a bunch of material testing various setups, so that was neat... Sadly you need to test with the material you're printing!

I glued the parts of the hood vent together on Friday and set up a template to mark up the hood for cutting.

Saturday started off with transferring the template location to the hood, carefully centering it and positioning it in the right spot to hit the support structure where Toyota has theirs.

Masking off and protecting the car for the cutting process. Tedious but much easier clean up. The car is still filthy, but no aluminum shavings everywhere.

Nothing to it but to do it, right? Took some guts to start the cutting, haha

Cutting the support structure chewed up the cutting disks quickly, the skin was easy though!

After many hours of messing around test fitting and cutting more material, the hood vent fits nearly perfectly! The rear corners are about a millimeter too proud of the surface so I'll tweak the design, but for now the hood vent fits well enough and with a bit of care nobody will ever know the difference.

Test fitted on Sunday after some clean up and painting the edges of the bare metal. This is before gluing the vent down, you can't even tell that it's not millimeter perfect.

Bonded the vent to the hood with outdoor rated silicone adhesive and prettied up the edges with the tape. Using junk fluid containers that AutoZone wouldn't take...

and done! Drove to work today. No more hood flutter on the highway at 80 mph and when I stop in traffic there's a pretty massive amount of heat pouring out of the hood vent. I still want to block the vent and test some before/after temps, plus I need to trim and reinstall the hood insulation.

Next up I need to design a rain tray/debris guard that clips onto the bottom of the vent so I can daily drive this in all weather and not be concerned since it's just a gaping hole now.

My first event in "XA" prep, against at least one real XA car too! The car feels great still, literally only softened the front bar for the less grippy site. I think the wing starts to help a little at high speeds, the car seemed a bit more stable at the ends of slaloms which were the only higher speed sections on yesterday's course. I'm going to struggle against the top XA cars without power, my plans for next year should get corner speeds up more and hopefully make up some of the difference there.

My fastest clean run:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_X33Fbp7wQ

My faster but dirty run (not sure where the cone was and nobody else seemed to know where either):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQclAmhF9og

Philly SCCA does a neat thing where the Top 5 drivers in points get to drive two random cars for two runs each and your fastest run in each car is summed. I won this competition again, the third time in a row

Thing is looking serious! E30s have a very similar need for hood ventilation.

Yeah, seems like a lot of manufacturers just want air to get in without giving it a good path outwards. Oh well
