My little 85L review

Only had the lens one day, but already I absolutely LOVE it

People says its slow to focus
It's not really that bad
It has a LOT of glass to move
If no one mentioned it is slower to focus, I wouldn't even have noticed really

The DOF is so insanely shallow wide open, I love it
The bokeh is super smooth, almost like liquid
You really need to check, double check and check again to make sure you are focused where you want to be
Definitely not a lens to grab and go "snap some shots"

It is stunningly sharp even at f/1.2
f/5.6-8 is almost too sharp, it's nuts!

The color and contrast that come out of this lens are superb
The need for PP work is almost non-existent (if you only do minor stuff like I do in PP anyway)

The only this I can tell so far that is "wrong" with the lens, it the minor CA wide open
I only saw this when shooting in super high contrast situations
By f/2.0 the CA is gone totally

Am I glad I got rid of my 24-70L for this?
HELL YES

Anyway, if you have anymore questions just ask

Here are some test shots, nothing fancy just messing around the house to get a feel for the lens

Oh hai toy car (f/1.2)

DOF: WIN

He's slow, for real

And double what he should weigh (talk about sharp eye and OOF nose)

Beat to hell, and still smiling

And a self portrait of my geek ass

I feel like this is the type of lens you can't fully appreciate viewing 1000 x 700 px pictures on a monitor, haha

Still pretty astounding, the shot of the car really makes it look like a toy. Congrats again on picking it up.

chris that looks awesome, I didn't realize the DOF would be so thin! I love the smooth bokeh on L glass, it's much more superior. I guess you traded/sold the 24-70 for this? I love that lens too.

I love it so far
It's going to be glued to my camera for a while

Yes, I did sell my 24-70L to help pay for this
I never really used it
Mostly used my 70-200L but now this thing is never coming off

Looking to pick up a 24L around May so I have something wide

ahh man i envy you bro.

The 85 f1.2L is an amazing lens, and indeed is on my wish list. But id like to get a wide and mid L zoom lens (16-35 & 24-70).
Once i have those, then ill start getting into some quality primes.

Sticking with the 5D?

I seen you post your Self portrait on POTN, and people Daved Hill-ed it

HA!
They made me look like a zoombie

Dave Hill is over-rated
Well not the man himself, when people try to emulate his work
I hate that

Get the 24-70
Great lens
I sold mine to get this

I agree. I think the way he works with light and his post processing is amazing, but 98% of the time when people try and get his "look" it ends up looking ridiculous. And not ridiculously good.

Post more pictures once you get some more time behind this lens!

In this situation it means 1750.00 lens.

Yea Chris, the 24-70 is definitly next. But the thought of an Mac Book Pro has been jumping around in my head lately too. So the lens might have to weight, but i think the lens is more important. I have computers that work fine right now.

Hit me up some time bro, we can go for a shoot or event.
I need to put my new 70-200 2.8L to some good use.
