whats wrong with the amp and who makes it and what kind of amp (Class D,AB, etc)?

Ive never heard of anyone fixing an amp for $40-50 unless its replacing the fuses. Maybe if its a "Do it yourselfer"

H&R in warminster repairs amps and offers a warranty

check the impedence of your speakers, and look for shorts. Best thing to do is power it outside of the car. Throw 12V to both the 12V in and the remote line and ground it. Protection light still come on?

Is this a 4 channel amp to power your speakers or mono block or 2 channel amp to power subs? Get your hands on a multi-meter and check the ohm reading on the speaker leads going to the amp. The impedence (ohms) may be too low for the amp to handle or there could be a dead short to ground on the speaker lead or at the speaker itself with its mounting or blown speaker
