Brake Lines..
You could hear a 'pssss' sound every time you stepped on the break..and following the car was fluid. Looking under the car, you could see along the exhaust pipes are wet. Again, it's hard to see because the car is so low. How hard is it to change the brake lines? or if we'd take it to a garage..anyone know how much it could cost? orrrrr....anyone looking for some side work? |

You're brake lines weren't cut. Youd know it because you....well actually you would be in the hospital or dead right now. With no brake fluid or no pressure in the lines...you would not be able to stop

We weren't going 100mph. My boyfriend took the car up the road and came back..
The pedal goes to the floor..and again makes the sound. Fluid was leaking behind the car.. I don't know what happened. I just know we need probably need new break lines. |

if there was even a small hole in a line you would have 0 brakes, not a little bit, but absolutely none. the pedal would have no pressure and fall to the floor and not come back up. is that the case?

sooo....by saying no you were disagreeing with my 100% correct statement. That, like TROLL said above, if your brake lines could not hold pressure...even a small hole..you would have 0 braking pressure.

since im not internet diagnosing anything anymore, ill answer ur original Q, i changed my front lines when i went to the BBK and put in stainless steel ones.....brake lines easy to change. but id also ask for a brake fluid flush at the same time. labor is low so price will be low and normal rubber lines r a dime a dozen.....there ya go....

If one line rotted out the car would still stop.
If you look into the master cylinder resivoir when it is empty, you will see that the bail is split at the bottom, this is the separation between the front fluid reciever and the rear. If a rear brake line fails and the brake pedal is depressed, the rear brake MC piston will draw fluid and pump it out onto the ground, but the front MC piston will still pressurize the front calipers and you will still have front brakes. Unfortunately, since there is no resistance in the MC from the rear brakes, the pedal travel will increase substantially or go to the floor. In this situation, pump the brakes without ever letting the pedal up all the way, and the car will slowly come to a stop as you build pressure in the front lines. Yes, the reverse also applies if a front line blows out. If both a front and rear line blow, you're screwed. Like mentioned above, the most likely scenario is that a rear brake line rotted out and burst. This is actually very common on old vechicles, especially in our area since there is so much corrosion. Brake lines are easy to replace and failrly easy to fabricate if you can't find an OEM replacement.
