Englishtown Top Fuel SuperNationals

Made it out Saturday to watch the Top Fuel dragster/Funny cars back there runs.

Unfortunately on Friday Neal Parker of Millville, NJ was killed when his Top alcohol funny car parachutes failed to open sending him to the end of the track at 300+mph killing him. RIP Neal Parker

I have never seen Top Fuel run before, I made the trip to Maple-Grove last September but 20 seconds before the Top Fuel cars were scheduled to run the skies opened up and the event was put on hold.

The sound/power/and feeling of these machines cannot possibly be described. You need to experience it for yourself. So I took some pictures but they don't do it justice!

Some fun facts about Top fuel (I'm sure you guys have seen this before but it still blows me away)

Fuel Facts
You don't have to be a drag racing fan to appreciate
these statistics. Some Interesting Top Fuel Dragster
Facts:

* One dragster's 500-inch Hemi makes more
horsepower then the first 8 rows at Daytona.

* Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes
1 1/2 gallons of nitro per second, the same rate of
fuel consumption as a fully loaded 747, but with 4
times the energy density.

* The supercharger takes more power to drive
then a stock hemi makes.

* With nearly 3000 CFM of air being rammed in
by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture
is compressed into nearly-solid form before ignition.

* Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock.

* Dual magnetos apply 44 amps to each spark plug.
This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder.

* At stoichiometric (exact) 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture
(for nitro), the flame front of nitro methane measures
7050 degrees F.

* Nitro methane burns yellow. The spectacular white
flame seen above the exhaust stacks at night is raw
burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water
vapor by the searing exhaust gases.

* Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during
a pass. After 1/2 way, the engine is dieseling from
compression plus the glow of exhaust valves at
1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down
by cutting off it's fuel flow.

* If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned
nitro builds up in those cylinders and then explodes
with a force that can blow cylinder heads off the block
in pieces or blow the block in half.

* Dragsters twist the crank (torsionally) so far (20
degrees in the big end of the crank) that sometimes
cam lobes are ground offset from front to rear to re-
phase the valve timing somewhere closer to syn-
chronization with the pistons.

* To exceed 300mph in 4.5 seconds dragsters must
accelerate at an average of over 4G's. But in reaching
200 mph well before 1/2 track, launch acceleration is
closer to 8G's.

* If all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for
free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run
costs $1000.00 per second.

* Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before
you have read this sentence.

* Top Fuel Engines ONLY turn 540 revolutions from
light to light!

* The redline is actually quite high at 9500rpm.

* To give you an idea of this acceleration, the current
TF dragster elapsed time record is 4.477 seconds
for the quarter mile. This means that you could be coming
across the starting line in your average Lingenfelter
powered "twin-turbo" Corvette at 200 mph
(on a FLYING START) and the dragster would BEAT
you to the finish line FROM A DEAD STOP in a quarter
mile distance!

sick pics. I went to etown in 08 for the Supernats for my first time ever! It was a life altering experience I will never forget. Hope to make it to the one in Maplegrove in October.. Ironically I was there in 08 and snapped pics of Kalitta's DHL funny car the day before his fatal accident

Nice pictures. I'm surprised there are people on here that go to these events. It was unfortunate to hear the news about Neal Parker.

Dante we will go to the Maple Grove one. It's October 7-10.

Can someone explain this? Does that mean start to finish of the race? I think thats what it means because if @ redline the whole race it would be 9500/60 = ~158 revs per second * ~4.5seconds = ~700 revolutions.

Not saying the 540 is wrong, because obviously times and engine speed vary. Just trying to understand your statement, cause if the engine only turns 540 times per race thats crazy!

The top fuels were running 3.9@310-315mph, shutting down after 1000ft.

So they could have been going faster. 3.9*158=612 revolutions, that number sounds about right.

No problem Bryan it was kind of maybe I'll make, I might not type of deal. I had to work from 8am-12pm that day, So I left work late and raced over to the track, to try and make in time to justify the $50 ticket price

We could meet up around philly sometime if you wanted chip!? I'm using a Nikon d60, the lense I used for all of the shots above was a Sigma 50-150mm /F-2.8. Love that lens.

I've gone every year for the past 4 years. I look forward to it every year. I actually got there early and got to watch them film NHRA Race Day and made it on TV (well, I was standing in the backround of them filming hahaha). I want to make it out to Maple Grove this year as well.

Neal Parker's death was a shame and extremely sad, as was with Kalitta last year.

Yeah Maple Grove is such a good track in my opinion. One of the best in the nation. Everyone just bad mouths it because of the old management it used to be under. I know some of the sportsman racers that'll be racing at the one in Maple. Hopefully not a washout like many years past.

Turbochicks it was definitely unfortunate to hear.
