600whp or bust 94 Mazda rx7 build
I had a lowered "stanced" saab 9-3ss on forgestars. I already had a daily (jetta tdi) and I felt the need for a build again. I've had a history of dsm's and a couple v8's along the way and like the saab, I wanted something different. I always liked the lines and the sound of a rx7. It was the car I use to pick in the racing games, its the car that I use to call my dream car. In October I began to look. I was looking everywhere and I couldn't find one within my budget or distance. I was in Oklahoma for work when I came across a lightly modded one in New York. I came home from OK on a Thursday night, Friday night I sold my Saab, and Saturday morning I was driving up to new York to see the car. I test drove it and it ran pretty good. Higher miles but the body and interior were beautiful. Engine only had "6k" on a fresh rebuild. Everything looked good and I bought the car on the spot. First thing I did was get rid of the horrid stock spoiler and got some solid grommets to fill the holes on the trunk, and ordered a catless midpipe the night I brought it home. She ran really good. The cars that use to give me problems with my stg 3 saab, were now bus lengths behind. Then one night, something changed. The idle was a little bit more rough, she didn't start as easy, and I knew something was wrong. My compression test confirmed my suspicions. I decided that this is it, its almost winter and this is going to be the build of my dreams.. I tore the car down and took the engine to Speed1/kdr. During disassembly they actually found the apex seal broke, but stayed in the seat and didn't touch the rotor housings! Can you say lucky! Everything looked brand new, the car already had a large streetport! While it was down, I decided to go half bridge for some extra ponies while still being somewhat streetable. Engine was rebuilt using REC apex seals and a turblown stud kit, with porting on the oil and coolant passessges. While the engine was out, I cleaned and sanded the engine bay and sprayed it gloss black. Now the engine is back in the car, Almost all the parts are in my possession to finish it! All other parts are new OEM. The goal is to make the car as solid as possible. The goal of the car is to hit 600whp on e85. Now to the Build list 1994 Mazda Fd rx7 140k miles 5spd Engine- Halfbridged 13brew REC apex seals Turblown stud kit xcessive lim ported uim rotary works tb and tb elbow New oil and water pump Oil and coolant passesges ported AEM coils Turbo and Supporting Parts- borg warner s366 .91 t4 divided dual tial 44mm wastegates Custom made exhaust manifold by me! custom water/air intercooler and vmounted heat exchanger tial 50mm bov Drivetrain/Suspension/Brakes exedy twin disk clutch poly bushings with zerk fittings on every bushing stock diff/trans (lets see how long they last!) all cleaned up!
my make shift paint booth lol my parts guy likes to have fun- @ firststatemoto primed! my intercooler and my puppy the first time the gloss saw some light! trucks are for pussys ;) shes in! And the reason she isn't finished yet...I get to distracted and take her on rides! My harness, standalone and coils thanks for C. Ludwig! another epic shipping label tag thanks to dan @ firststatemoto The first mock up of the borg and the vmount! id1000's and id2000's chilling with the 400lph walbro! xcessive LIM vs stock! No rice, Corn fed ;) Building my manifold out of 304ss sch 10! First manifold I ever built First test fit with my custom manifold! And that's where I am now. I need to finish welding the manifold, weld my intercooler brackets, Modify the radiator for the vmount, run my fuel lines and get fittings. Then everything in the engine bay should be done. After all the test fit is completed. The main parts will be removed for ceramic/powder coat. While that is happening, I will be installing all my suspension bushings, coil overs, brakes, and undercoating my wheel wells. Can not wait to hear this thing! -Ben Last edited by Greenyfd; 05-25-2013 at 10:29 PM. |

I know right! Kinda crazy how that worked out! Looking forward to next time meeting you with my car! You aren't that far away, next time you'll be up in my area, PM me and come see the car!! Update for today--Main welding of manifold is complete. Marking off wastegate locations tonight, taking the burr bit to the inside of the flanges to make them smooth and opening up the holes for the wastegates. Maybe welding them in tomorrow? We shall see. My oil cooler kit, throttle body and throttle body elbow should be here tomorrow/thursday |

Thanks! I miss her once in a while. It was so different. It was one of the first saabs on stretched tires (sorry I got caught up in the phase)..Now it seems like everyone on the forum is doing it...Oh well. Left while on top ;) I'll post a couple more pictures of the saab as my build with the FD goes along... |

Where in NY did you pick the RX7 up from? There used to be 3 red R1's within 10 minutes of my house.
