Local police to use radar?..

HARRISBURG, May 15 – State Rep. Bryan Lentz, D-Delaware, has introduced legislation that would allow local police to use radar equipment to catch speeding vehicles and increase traffic safety in Pennsylvania.

In every state except Pennsylvania, municipal police officers are authorized to use radar to enforce speed limits. Currently, only Pennsylvania State Police officers are authorized to use radar to verify a driver’s speed, one of the most effective and accurate speed-control devices available.

"All full-time municipal police personnel should have the same tool state police have used for years effectively," Lentz said. "Putting radar equipment in the hands of local police would increase safety on our streets and reduce fatalities. Consistent enforcement of the speed limit would deter habitual speeding and send a definitive message that reckless driving is dangerous and not tolerated."

The legislation would permit local police officers to use radar in certain circumstances and with reasonable restrictions. Radar use would be permitted only by full-time local officers who are employed by full-service police departments and who have undergone training that has been approved by both the Pennsylvania State Police and the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission.

Lentz said his bill would also create a fund to provide grants for municipal law enforcement accreditation.

According the Pennsylvania Police Chiefs Association:

In 2000, 12,626 people were killed in speeding-related crashes across the country.
Of that number, 582 were killed in Pennsylvania.
314 died on non-interstates with a posted speed limit less than 55 mph, but greater than 35 mph.
Speeding is a factor in 30 percent of all fatal crashes.
In 2000, more than $1.11 million was spent in Pennsylvania associated with these crashes.
In the United States, 75 percent of all roads are under the jurisdiction of local government.

heard this on the news super late last night...

thoughts..

this may :
-cost money to train officers..
-money will no longer(if it already doesn't, idk) goto the municipality, but instead goto into a fund w/ state police..
- cost money for radar guns..

Will I can see it now another fine that will increase the cost of a ticket the radar gun fund. This will be paid by those who have been given a ticket. This is really gonna suck. I guess im gonna have to get a radar detector.

I'd rather radar be used by local authorities. In DE or MD I know where every single police officer is. Radar detectors are nice toys. I don't really speed, but I do like to know an officers whereabouts while on the road. It's also nice to have the Emergency Warning on my detector to alert of Emergency Vehicles responding to/from calls at Emergency Speed.

thats my main problem with it. Not so much the speeding, I've had my fair share of those tickets... don't need any more.

just another way for the government to make its money back, my raping the general public. i mean, to make a good cut, all the cops would have to do is hide along side 309 on friday afternoon rush hour and like bam, theres enough in tickets to make back the money that was spent on these things, and or whatever else it will go to

bottom line is, if this goes through, alot of people will be F@#$%&d

I don't see a need for this. If a cop sees someone driving too fast, cite him for reckless driving, not speeding. This will just add cost to taxpayers. Clearly they are already pulling people over for speeding (they make it seem like you can't get pulled over for speeding unless its by a statey). Why not just continue as before?.. stupid legislators. They already use timing marks and stop watches, so they have methods. Maybe I am just bias because I never got a speeding ticket before?

edit: elliot- the rep. is from Delco, so I am guessing it will be implemented there as well.

yeah theres no reason for this at all. like Nors stated, they have there methods and they work. so why fix somthing if its not broken.
and quite honestly, theres alot worse things going on out there than some random people speeding. cops should be concentrating on getting the drugs and guns off the streets.

Id much rather the cops go absolutely nuts with their radar, that way I know where they are. Its scary when you are driving and see a cop hiding without one peep from your detector. I say let them go ape**** with their new toys cuz theyre really just playing into our hands.

I think tickets are down since gas was like 4 something a gallon, and now given the current economy I am sure they are down even further. People cant really afford to speed, maybe that is why they are doing it. Is this true, does anyone know if the issuing of tickets are down?
