Got my shocks refreshed with a minor revalve from Shaftworks USA, finally had time to install them and realign my car right before we went to Maine for the Brunswick ProSolo in my wife's RX-8. I finally got to autocross the car with not-dead tires and the new setup this past weekend at Pocono. The car is FAST and I love it, haha. Only minor issue (which was expected) was the new 17x10s rubbing the rear trailing arm due to the traction mod lowering the arm into the path of the wheel. I've already ordered some different arms to get more clearance. Besides scraping the wheels and sounding bad, the only annoyance was the wheel weights being forcefully relocated in the process. Rebalanced them Saturday night and we're good to go for the next event.

The only "actual" car faster raw time was an SSP GT3 by a couple of tenths. The next faster cars were karts. My car is clearly working well!

My fastest clean run from Pocono (and only clean run...):

Leveled the splitter and tweaked the angle so it's pointed slightly nose down:

Installed new trailing arms, cheapies from Megan Racing/Hard Race. The sphericals are sealed so hopefully they hold up well as my car is a DD. It had "finger" space between wheel and trailing arm with 17x9s, now it has much more clearance. Shouldn't be a problem with 17x10s now.

Well... I did some setup changes and the car is faster and easier to drive. Not 100% where I want it yet, but the car is absurd considering how relatively little it has done to it. Coned away top PAX by a few tenths at Philly, but my clean run was still 2nd... by 9 thousandths.

I derped with video a bit and missed my fast run, sadly. My 2nd fastest run from yesterday's Finger Lakes SCCA event. My fastest run was good for the PAX win and 3rd in raw time behind a couple of CM drivers.

and I got to see my old first gen BRZ too

Picked up a 3.73 pumpkin for when I go FI. I'll have to swap my OSG over but NBD

Some pics from our big local autocross. Had video issues on Sunday, but Saturday I got video. I finished 4th on Saturday and 8th on Sunday, good for 8th overall.

Found a cheap Scorpion catback on eBay, they're normally $1k+ and this was $375 due to a vendor clearing out stock. I wanted polished tips but the seller sent one with black tips. Meh, I was planning on swapping the tips anyway. Saved almost no weight over the STI muffler but it sounds amazing and fitment was spot on.

Coned away top PAX again... this time in the rain with Philly SCCA. No car setup changes! Love how forgiving it is now

Yeah, sucks to see TST essentially dead

Had a great event with Philly SCCA last weekend and a fast friend drove with me. We had a good battle but I got the W. I finished 5th in PAX as well!

Final Philly SCCA event of the year! I had a decent shot at moving up in points and I managed to do it with a solid 2nd in PAX! I finished 3rd overall for the year, pretty happy with that after a few really tight events where I came out on the wrong side of results by a tenth or two.

Here's my fastest run, even turned on the wipers as I reached for third gear, haha.

https://youtu.be/p388BtGlVDc

I had a special guest, a long time STS Miata driver and good friend, Rich DiMarco, codrive with me. His first run was hilarious since the steering is a LOT more responsive than a 1990 Miata! Here's his fastest run:

Final two events of the year the past two weekends, with NNJR SCCA at MetLife stadium. I took top raw time (fastest overall!) and 5th in PAX both weekends. Big car changes between both weekends and HUGE car changes since the last Philly event, setup philosophy wise. I'm making great progress with the new style valving and the way it's made the car a lot more stable. I've had to loosen the car up a lot steady state, including reinstalling the rear swaybar.

On the 9th I had a friend, Nick Babin, codrive. He recently sold his ND Miata and picked up an RX-8 to copy Amy's build and then go wild from there with aero and such. He needed a ride as he hasn't autocrossed regularly in years. My car is faster than everything he's ever driven at autocross and the course was wildly busy so it took him longer than he'd have liked to get up to speed and never put together a solid run.

Nick's fastest:

My fastest run:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJ1xmzYvCxk

Realigned the car during the week, tweaking things a bit

Then on the 16th I hit up the final event of the year. Mark Labbancz, an NNJR autocross chair who also recently sold his ND Miata needed a codrive. Funny how that works out, haha. He ended up getting pretty close to me on pace, but neither of us put together a run we were really all that happy with.

and some pics from the past two weekends:

Designed some new rear swaybar mounts to get rid of the ridiculous stock rear swaybar subframe and optimize the rear swaybar geometry. My printer ran out of filament, but the parts were still usable for test fitment at least. I'll get them done in aluminum now

Silly stock rear swaybar subframe and its mounting location:

My design:

I also swapped to 3.73 gearing from the stock 4.10, I was tired of ~59 mph in 2nd being my top speed. I was abusing the rev limiter a LOT this year. I bought a used 2014 IS250 diff and swapped my OS Giken into. The Lexus diff appeared to have never been serviced, it smelled AWFUL and was full of sludge. Truly so bad smelling that while I was working on it in the garage, my wife came outside to ask me a question about dinner and she stopped dead in her tracks to ask what the smell was, haha. Gearing is much better now! ~65 mph in 2nd and it's a more calm cruise on the highway. There's definitely a bit of loss of acceleration but honestly it feels totally fine. I really wish Subaru had used 3.91 gearing in the 2022+ cars, the automatic got 3.91s but the manual was 4.10s like early first gen twins.

The Lexus diff when I opened it:

Wiped off one section of the diff cover, you can see how gross it was with a line of sludge showing the fill level.

Much better!

New diff assembled, backlash and pattern checked out perfectly. I love how well made the OS Gikens are, I've not needed to adjust shims once on any of them, they just drop in perfectly like an OEM diff.

This is definitely the coolest car project I've done yet, IMO. I designed new rear swaybar mounts to correct the rear swaybar geometry when lowered and stiffen the mounts. I sent the design off to be 3D printed in aluminum and they arrived today. The whole process was great, the printer communicated with me the whole time and confirmed some aspects of my design. For example, they 3D printed the threads into the mount so I didn't have to tap the holes. So cool!

The design ended up being perfect and everything went together smoothly.

This is the stock geometry, you can see how the swaybar isn't perpendicular to the end link or the ground but it's also not centered on the control arm so it can torque the arm.

My design fixes that
