i am trying to learn so please help me out. how would you know if a car was driven within your parameters? i am thinking without a compression test or some other type of exam how would tell if a car was warmed up before the driver jumps on it.

I don't drive above 3/3.5k when the cars needle isn't at the middle of the gauge. It's rather hard to tell if someone always did it, but it's a huge concern of mine cause that initial start up is when the engine is dry of oil in the morning and needs at least one minute for a full cycle of oil let alone getting on it at all. This is with any car I drive, especially boosted ones as it's critical

The temp gauge isn't really a good indicator of the engine temp. The sensors are not sensitive enough to indicate the proper temperature of the engine, not to mention that if the coolant is up to temp it doesn't mean the oil is. I usually drive the car for a good 20 minutes before I even think of revving it.

Angdefeo, you can't really tell if the PO warmed the engine up or not. Best thing to do when buying a used car is to do a leak down test. It will tell you a lot.

+1 for a leakdown test.. you can tell a lot about a cars history by a leakdown test.

Honestly the only way to gauge it is to assess the seller and determine whether or not they are a liar, and then ask them flat out precautions that they take when driving the car. There's nothing that will really indicate how the car was driven other than a compression or leakdown test and those only really tell you the condition of the valves/rings, not condition of main bearings, turbo, or other important things. Even all things considered buying a car is a huge gamble and sometimes you get screwed.

^this.. I notice in my m3 that even after the coolant temp is in the middle the engine is still a little "tight". Give it another couple miles and things start to improve. I do wish I had an oil temp gauge. Maybe it's all in my head.

boosted cars are pretty hit or miss unless completely stock. only then do your chances slightly improve lol
