Plus there are no drivers out there that are more talented than WRC drivers; a sport that would be almost impossible without AWD.
I don't know about the streets around you but the streets around me are pretty controlled and grippy, sure once per year it will snow but I just take a day off work which keeps me away from all the moron drivers that smash into each-other.

WRC is held in the dirt and snow primarily which is why AWD has such an advantage, I stay on tarmac where rear wheel drive works just fine and has half as many axle's, cv joints, diffs, and a million other things to break as well as less weight to haul around.

And for the record, it's typically argued that F1 drivers have the most talent as their reflexes have to be quicker than any other motorsport because of how ridiculously fast the cars are and they have to be able to handle 3 g's worth of cornering force. I hate to take anything away from WRC drivers as they are sick as hell but you look at Ken Block and Travis Pastrana who came from other sports into WRC in 05/06 and within a few years were premier drivers in that series and then you look at F1 drivers who have been training their entire lives specifically for F1 and you begin to see what I mean.

Personally and for most people that get involved with track days, rear wheel drive is all about the driving experience, balancing a car at the limit of available traction or maybe a bit beyond it if you're showing off using just the gas is an indescribable feeling.

By that rationale, line up John Shepherd against any of the purpose built Mustang race cars and he'll be the one getting raped, there are thousands of Mustangs that run faster than that Talon.

I dono man.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOE2-...E89C8&index=28

i think the most challenging thing about WRC that u do not find in f1 is the constant surface changes, u arnt just racing through asphalted surfaces the entire time. WRC there is huge puddles, dirt, then it changes to asphalt, tarmac gravel not all wheels have contact on the ground, etc etc. not to mention every time you race on a dirt corner its going to feel different due to the 20 other rally cars that have gone threw it put different ruts into it and what not. dont get me wrong F1 is sick, but i think skill for skill wrc has way more variables that you have to incorporate into driving fast then f1.

I agree with the fact that F1 drivers are a very skilled bunch, but I don't think they compare to the skill level associated with WRC. For instance, WRC drivers have to be accustomed to driving on ANY type of terrain; snow, dirt, tarmac, gravel, wet tarmac, mud, and lots lots more. And each of these different terrain types warrant completely different driving skills and styles. F1 on the other hand will only compete on tarmac and sometimes wet tarmac.

Also WRC drivers change gear just as quickly and just as often as F1 drivers. And since F1 cars have such ludicrous amounts of grip, you really have to point the wheel in a certain direction to get the car to go there. On a rally course, just because you turn the wheel to right, doesn't mean the car is going to go there.

Not to mention that WRC drivers even need to deal with constant elevation changes and airborne conditions. Something F1 drivers never have to deal with.

I was mainly referring to street conditions. On a designated 1/4 mile, it would be a completely different story.
