there are plenty of laws i think are retarded, that doesnt mean i hate the government. people that hate the government because they "take away all our rights" need to wake the hell up and realize what other countries governments are like and then suddenly ours wont seem so bad.

Although I agree with what you're saying...that's also a fine line. It's like the lesser of two evils. If you compare a guy who beats his wife with a guy that kills his wife. I guess that guy who only beats his wife isn't so bad in comparison. In the end that doesn't make it right.

calling our government the lesser of all the evils is outrageous.

You missed my point. It wasn't the government itself I was referring to. It was the having many less "freedoms" to begin with compared to having some "freedoms" taken away.

Anyone wanna discuss Megan's Law or the Adam Walsh Law? Do you feel it's depriving the sexual offenders of freedoms or rights as a citizen?

I think...

Freedom in america has been replaced with debt and fear. We work everyday to pay outrageous taxes. We drive very carefully, not for safetys sake, but in fear of being pulled over.

Oh and, about being searched for 'probable cause' such as a cop thinking he smells weed...

I support a cops ability to use common sense, like if they see an explosive on the passenger seat, or see blood all over the car... These seem like decent probable cause. In these situations, there is the possibility of serious crimes being discovered, and can actually benefit the community.

Smelling what they think could be pot, I think is bull****. There isn't a possible victim in that situation. There is no protecting and serving going on. At that point, it is nothing but abuse of power and harrassment. Search and seizure (which goes against the constitution) over a harmless substance that shouldn't be illegal in the first place, is pretty crazy. Searching because an officer thinks he smells pot is a huge waste of time and a waste our tax money.

The topic of drunk stops... again, I think its a waste of time and money. I think its better for cops to patrol, and look for irradic or wreckless driving. Honestly, if someone is a little over the limit, but is driving carefully and safely home, there should be no reason to be given a DUI. If they are actually showing signs of drunk driving, a patrolling officer will spot it out and pull them over. A patrolling officer can also spot out wreckless driving in general, as well as keep an eye out around town. Drunk stops are a lazy way of checking for not only alcohol on the breath, but also inspection, registration, junior drivers out past curfew, suspended license.... So yea, I think drunk stops are stupid.

I honestly think that megans law is total bull****... We don't make every criminal go around and knock on peoples doors and notifying them that they are law breakers... Be we think its ok cause it has to do with kids... Bull****. Your forcing these people to live as outcasts and be tormented their entire lives. If your going to make them do it, you have to make every crimial do it too then.

I think that a registry is a good idea. If you commit a sex crime against a minor, you are put into a registry. There is nothing wrong with that. Embarrassed by it? Tough ****, don't be a child molester then.

I don't see what, if any, rights are being violated here.

well they have to go around and notify that they are living near by and what address they live it.... how about having people that commited a crime in general, go around and tell people where they live and everything else....but since it involves children, people over look that, and generally are too ignorant to see the whole picture.

Sources? I think you are misinformed. The offender does not notify the community. The community is notified by their PD, and all identities are kept confidential.

In cases where the convicted sex offender is determined by a court to be a Sexually Violent Predator1.
When an out-of-state offender is required to submit to community notification in their state of origin, regardless of whether or not the offender is classified as a sexually violent predator.
The Pennsylvania State Police will provide community notification flyers to the police departments having primary jurisdiction over the municipalities where the sexually violent predator/out-of-state offender resides. Included with the community notification flyers are instructions for the police departments on how to perform community notification.

The community notification flyers contain the following information:

The name of the Sexually Violent Predator/Out-of-State Offender
The address or addresses in which he resides
The offense for which he was convicted
A statement that he has been determined by court order to be a Sexually Violent Predator or a statement that the Out-of-State Offender is subject to community notification by his state of origin.
A photograph of the Sexually Violent Predator/Out-of-State Offender, if available.
NOTE: The community notification flyers WILL NOT include any information that might reveal the victim's name, identity, and residence.

The chief law enforcement officer of the police department of the municipality where a sexually violent predator or out-of-state offender resides is responsible for community notification. The officer is required to make community notification to the following persons:

Neighbors of the Sexually Violent Predator/Out-of-State Offender
The director of the county children and youth service agency of the county where the sexually violent predator/out-of-state offender resides
The superintendent of each school district and the equivalent official for private and parochial schools enrolling students through grade 12 in the municipality where the sexually violent predator/out-of-state offender resides
The superintendent of each school district and the equivalent official for each private and parochial school located within a one-mile radius of where the sexually violent predator/out-of-state offender resides
The licensee of each certified day care center and licensed preschool program and owner/operator of each registered family day-care home in the municipality where the sexually violent predator/out-of-state offender resides
The president of each college, university, and community college located within 1,000 feet of a sexually violent predator's or out-of-state offender's residence.

go on any website that has registered sex offenders.... their address's are on there.... Then its not hard to look up their name for their number. Well, i thought in New jersey, they had to go around and notify people them selves. But my point still stands. Why don't they have flyers for robbers go around. Why don't they have flyers for known drug dealers. Exactly.... because people thinks its fine because it involves kids. IF your gonna do something like that, I think you should make ALL criminals do the same. Im not arguing about whether or not these people aren't ****ed up at all, but for you to say that they are more ****ed up than someone who goes around pointing guns in peoples faces or someone selling drugs to your kids so they can get high and possibly OD, is just plain ignorant.

Dude, tone it down. No need to start calling people ignorant, we are all having a rational discussion here.

I understand your thought process on why other criminals don't have to be put into a registry, but I am going to have to argue that it is "right" to take extra steps to protect a minor.

I'm not saying I agree w/Megan's laws, I am on both sides of the fence. Part of me thinks its good, part of me things its detrimental. Say the offender is truly rehabilitated. Should they still have the same negative connotations placed upon them?

Studies also show that sex offenders, on average, have also been found more likely to be repeat offenders then criminals that have committed other crimes. This should factor in somehow.

You, as a citizen of age, are responsible for you. Cover your own ass. You are cognizant of your surroundings and able to understand what is going on. You know not to leave your doors unlocked, or people might steal your stuff. You get the picture.

A minor does not have the same situational awareness, nor should be expected to foresee everything they need to watch out for. Obviously parenting comes into play here as well...

Where do you draw that line as to what is fair and unfair?
