Saturday would probably be a better track configuration for a miata. Sunday will have two very long straights and a high speed corner between them.

to be able to run in HPDE2 i assume that i

would have to have some track time under my belt?

also maybe you can help me with this. i just checked my hjc helmet and its a m2000. on the NASA website it states the following rule for helmets. i wonder if i would be ok with my helmet or would i be required to purchase a new one?

" SAFETY EQUIPMENT – Seatbelts must be in good condition. Factory seatbelts are OK. Cars without fixed roofs are required to have roll bars. Natural fibers are recommended for clothing. Minimum allowable clothing is jeans, a T-shirt & closed toe shoes. You will be required to wear a helmet when on the track. The minimum rating is SNELL 1990 (SA1990 or M1990). Newer helmets with a SA rating are recommended. Eye protection is required (face shield, goggles, safety glasses). The more and better the safety equipment you have & use, the safer you will be.

thanks again

I have no idea where you found that. The NASA Northeast web site is a bit outdated and mentions SA2000 helmets can be used in one area, but in reality, they stopped allowing 2000 year helmets for msot events and you need a SA2005 not an M 2005 helmet. The M helmet isn't certified to meet the fire and impact specifications that the SA helmets meet.

Thanks for the info. I'll pic up a new lid.

That super out-dated 1990 info is on the nasaproracing.com rules link...terrible.

All drivers are required to wear a properly fitted and secured helmet while on track. Helmets must be approved by Snell and carry a sticker of Snell 2000 ( SA2000) or newer*. Ratings other than that of “SA” (Special Application), i.e. “M1995, M2000”, are not acceptable. *Alternatively, helmets with an FIA certification of 8860-2004 or newer, or an SFI label showing the rating of 31.1/2005 or newer are acceptable. It is strongly recommended that any helmet sustaining any substantial impact be replaced.

Note- the minimum helmet standard starting January 1, 2012 will be: All drivers are required to wear a properly fitted and secured helmet while on track. Helmets must be approved by Snell and carry a sticker of Snell SA2005 or newer*. Ratings other than that of “SA” (Special Application), i.e. “M2000, M2005, or CMR2007”, are not acceptable. *Alternatively, helmets with an FIA certification of 8860-2004 or newer, or an SFI label showing the rating of 31.1/2005 or newer are acceptable. It is strongly recommended that any helmet sustaining any substantial impact be replaced.
NASA MA lists a SA or M 2000 or 2005 as being acceptable helmets. But I definitely suggest an SA helmet for all on track activities.

Why would they disallow SA2000 helmets already, especially for HPDE, SA2010s just came out so that is only current + 2Gen? I know that NASA is not allowing anything other than a SA2005 newer starting next season for racers, but was not sure if that carried over to HPDE...and since their own GCR isn't updated correctly I guess I'll have to ask the Tech Chief for clarification.

I would say that if you need to buy a helmet anyway buy an SA2005 on closeout (if you can find one) or an SA2010. The SA2010 will keep you in spec until the sickening smell of your own dried sweat is too much for you to take forcing you to replace the helmet anyway.

I emailed the chief of tech for NASA HPDE to get clairification on the allowed helmets. It seems that different region sites also have conflicting info. I was also email conflictign info for previous events in the past couple years.

I recently bought a G-force Pro Eliminator SA2010 full face helmet from Saferacer for $249.99. JSC speed has some good deals on SA2005 and SA2010 helmets too. If M2005 helmets are allowed, I'll be selling my used for only four 45-50 second autoX runs M2005 helmet that I bought before I did my first HPDE that required a SA helmet.

When it sells out, it sells out. You can register a week before the event, but I can guarantee you that there will be no spots available by that time. It will sell out long before that.
