Google online. Set a reasonable price in your head. Look at the car. Tell them your not here to debate prices and if they will sell it for $X you will buy it. If not, just walk. You will either A. buy the car quickly or B. walk out quickly.

they will always try to convince you to come back and they will find something. don't waste your time just leave. i wasted over an hour at a dealership having them tell me they had something in the range i wanted to spend. they had nothing.

I honestly think they are a scam.
Carfax is useful if you can see through the bull**** and understand that stuff like service information and accident reporting on there will not be in any way accurate.

It will tell you however the origin of the car, where it's been registered and driven for certain time periods so you can determine for instance if it was truly a florida car, etc. You can also figure out if the car keeps changing hands (a good indication that it's a piece of garbage). You can verify that it's a one owner car if advertised that way. You can also check for total loss odometer problems, etc.

It is USEFUL. The scam is how they advertise it. I think someone should probably get a class action suit together at some point against them because it's verrrrry scammy.

If you're really concerned with getting a car with a known history, get a BMW off lease with 50,000 miles. It's usually certified with 100,000 mile warranty. The service records are available from the dealership it was purchased from if you fax a reg card with the vin on it. All service was most likely done since they have free maintenance for the first 50,000 miles. In the case of Marina's car we honestly couldn't find a difference between her car with 50,000 miles and one that was brand new (seriously). Except it cost less than half of the new price. Parts can be pricey but we haven't found it to be that bad. And you get to be a bmw owning asshole. That's worth it.

I saw one around my work for probably the best price for a 2010 and the mileage. Going to try and take a test drive in it during a lunch break this week.

Most of the cars I've bought were 4+ owners with no issues. In fact, the only issues we have had were very low mile 1 owner cars(Julie's HHR SS, Julie's GTO). The more owners, the better chance of a dealer getting their hands on it and changing fluids to sell it. It doesn't mean its a bad thing if 5 people owned it.

Also, you don't need a Carfax to look under a car and see a clean under carriage to know its not a car that saw tons of salt.

I have never heard of a dealer doing any kind of preventative maintenance to sell a car. I've found several cars on the lots with evidence of blown head gaskets. They will push whatever out they can with only cosmetic work. Buyer beware for sure.

My wallet is now much lighter and the M3 should be much faster by the end of the weekend.

Actually probably not since I Have to send in the ECU for the tune.

dealers will only do what's required of them to make the car pass inspection. Or if they're legally forced to do something (like dealers must replace the tires if they are under a certain tread depth....at least in NJ they have to)

If it doesn't sell within about 2 months, most of the time they sell those used cars off to auction anyway, so they're trying not to spend money on a car if they don't have to.

It sucks. I did buy my z06 from a dealer used as a 1 owner car, but I gave it a real thorough check over and test drive. Buyer definitely beware, and the best tool you can bring with you is knowledge about the car and reviews from actual owners.
